"You need behave yourselves in the eyes of the Lord. I will be your guide, and I know... your parents would be proud of you."

Skid and Pump go out to trick-or-treat like they usually do until they meet Father Gregor, the local priest who promises to help them become better kids for the people they love most. Meanwhile, a familiar friend returns...

"Hollow Sorrows" contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: The fisherman that tries to scare Sheriff John and Deputy Jack is voiced by Zach Hadel (psychicpebbles) and he's depicted with the usual Gag Nose that Zach's cartoon avatar is usually drawn with.
  • And I Must Scream: If Patty's pleas for help are anything to go by, those possessed by Moloch are fully conscious, but unable to stop their bodies.
  • Badass Preacher: Father Gregor manages to hold his own against Moloch, easily dodging many of his attacks as well as catching up with him as he runs away to exorcise him from the bodies of various innocents before ultimately banishing him from the realm of the living for good even when he's injured.
  • Break the Cutie: Skid and Pump are left completely distraught after Father Gregor succeeds at killing Moloch, and after Lila is given a "The Reason You Suck" Speech by Gregor for being an irresponsible parent, Skid saying that he doesn't want to be a burden to her causes Lila to break down in tears.
  • Call-Back:
    • Pump is shown burning a Happy Fella early in the episode, alluding to a gag in Unwanted Guests where Pump suggests such to see if it screams.
    • When Skid explained to Father Gregor that he and Pump are the ones who summon Moloch in the first place, the latter apparently still annoyed to Skid's obliviousness regarding on how he left the attic.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When leaving the candy store, Father Gregor gives Kevin a small bottle of holy water. When Moloch later goes on his rampage and ends up possessing Kevin, Radford uses it to dispel Moloch from his body.
  • Darker and Edgier: By far the darkest episode of the series thus far. The episode is more light on humor than previous episodes, Moloch is portrayed far more seriously here, Lila is shown to have started to drink away her sorrows, Pump's parents not being around is given more emphasis and is played far more seriously, and the episode ends on a rather depressing note.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Father Gregor, who was initially just part of a short gag in the previous episode, takes on a major role here as he tries to guide Skid and Pump into being better kids.
  • Demonic Possession: Moloch possesses Patty, and later down the line takes over Roy, Kevin then Skid and Pump.
  • Doomed Supermarket Display: Kevin is introduced having finished compiling a pyramid of stacked up jars of candy, only for Skid and Pump to hyperactively crash in knocking it all down and leave after being given two jars for free.
  • Downer Ending: While Skid and Pump are ultimately safe by the end and Moloch is finally Killed Off for Real, they're distraught by his loss; Lila gets a "The Reason You Suck" Speech from Father Gregor for her negligence of Skid, which shakes her to her core and leads her and Skid to cry in each other's arms; Pump gets cheered up by a gift from his parents, unaware that it's actually from his grandpa, with the implication that the reason for their absence is more than just work; and Gregor is caught by the cult and brought to face the Eyes of the Universe, which puts him into a trance that leaves him on his knees.
  • Giant Spider: The beginning of the episode makes it seem that the Fat Thief got intimidated by a regular spider. However, the size of its drool from its initial appearance, and then in the ending where it grabs a mannequin figure with only two long limbs without its body being visible, implies that the thieves encountered an abnormally large spider, one with blue irises similar to the ones that both Pump and Bob have shown before.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Pump indirectly reveals his name to Father Gregor, Moloch starts to freak out and escape, with the ensuing chase followed.
  • Pedophile Priest: Kevin suspects Gregor of being this when he asks "And why is an old dude hanging around with kids?" and Gregor responding that he's putting them "in the right path" doesn't convince him.
  • "The Reason I Suck" Speech: After Lila arrives back home, Skid outright tells her that he doesn't want to be a problem for her, and thinks he's being a burden in her life. This notion ends up completely breaking Lila.
Skid: Mom? I-I don't want you sad, and I don't want to be a problem for you. I... I-I'm sorry. I just want to be better. I don't want to annoy you...
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gregor delivers one of these to Lila after she gets back home drunk, accusing her of being a negligent and irresponsible mother.
Father Gregor: ...No wonder your son is unguided.
Lila: You won't talk to my son like that!
Gregor: I understand you are a widow, but your negligence has put your son in many dangers! You don't even know why he is here, and all you can do is drink?! You... are an irresponsible mother.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • John and Jack are intimidated by possessed Patty's Death Glare and just decide to backtrack closing the door.
    • As usual, Rick decides to quit his job (this time as the Mayor's limo driver) when confronted by the episode's monster.
  • The Stinger: One for the YouTube version and a "Real Ending" one for the Newgrounds version as usual.
    • For the YouTube version, Ooga Booga actually doesn't wait for the credits to end, jumping the viewer midway through before taunting them about how she can be anywhere now.
    • On Newgrounds, the thieves apologize to the "Candy Dealer" at the manor, who's there with the cult. After the Fat Thief confesses it was a spider that scared him, the cult disperses and the dealer leaves, telling them that they're running out of luck.
  • Taken for Granite: Moloch turns to grey stone after being banished, with his hand and legs collapsing in the process.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Upon Gregor telling Skid and Pump to stop running and walk normally, the two grow up into realistically proportioned bodies that walk smoothly, and switch back to their normal selves when the priest tells them "Not THAT normal!".
  • Terrible Pick-Up Lines: The Costume Happy Fella trying to flirt with a coworker by saying "Hey girl, do you want a fella to make you happy?"
  • There Was a Door: Moloch's preferred method to escape is just crashing through walls and doors. When he escapes from the morgue he also leaves an Impact Silhouette.
  • Watch the Paint Job: During his rampage through town, Moloch wrecks Mayor Evermore's limo, at which point Rick decides to quit his job saying "i am not gonna clean this".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gregor is infuriated at the reveal that Skid and Pump summoned Moloch into this realm for fun.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Moloch not only painfully possessed Roy, as well as Skid and Pump, he also was seemingly willing to do harm on a group of infants in the hospital, only being stopped when Dexter's mother comes.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Poor Kevin just can't catch a break. First, things seem to be looking up for him with Radford volunteering to help him out during his shift, Skid and Pump being willing to pay back all the free candy he gave them over the years and Radford blessing the candy shop with the holy water making a lot of costumers come in... but then he gets possessed by Moloch, and the resulting exorcism leaves some serious property damage to the shop with Kevin being back to his cynical, child-hating mood.
    Kevin: FFF-(coughs)-ing kids...!

"I just want to be better."

After having gone through his emotionally traumatizing adventure with Moloch and Father Gregor, Skid tells his mom that he doesn't want to be a burden to her and wants to be better. Him saying this causes him and Lila to break down crying as they embrace each other, ending off the episode on a depressing note.
