Recap / South Park S 23 E 3 Shots

Go To

Original air date: 10/9/2019

Randy celebrates earning $300,000 through Tegridy sales, and Sharon disapproves of the unethical deals he made to get the money. Meanwhile, Cartman refuses to get a vaccine, despite his mother's requests.

This episode provides examples of...

  • Abusive Parents: The parents from South Park and neighboring counties force all of their children into a humiliating wrangling contest where they are treated like pigs. They're hogtied and forced to get injections against their will, even as they scream in sheer terror. Their rights to refuse a shot are ignored, as well as, in Cartman's case, his status as a conscientious objector.
  • Afraid of Needles: Cartman will run around stripping naked and squealing like a pig at the mere sight of a needle. He later claims to be a conscientious objector to slip out of obligatory vaccinations.
  • A Fool and His New Money Are Soon Parted: Randy's celebrations about earning three hundred thousand dollars cost him the bulk of what he's made.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The episode ends with Cartman horrified upon seeing his mom becoming "artistic" just before he was about to take his shot. It is unknown whether or not he took the shot afterwards.
  • An Aesop: You should stand for something instead of just letting everyone use you for their own benefit.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When Cartman confronts Liane for how she and other parents tried to give him a shot while he was sleeping, the scene implies that Cartman's going to run away from home in response to the incident. Instead, he ends up kicking his mother out of the house.
    • When Randy realizes he's been a jerk to his "partner" because of money, it's implied he's going to apologize to his wife. Instead he goes to apologize to Towelie (who forgives him... eventually).
  • Berserk Button: Liane is a passive woman, but accusing her of being a bad mother enrages her so much that all the South Park parents, even Sheila and Stephen, get intimidated.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Insulting her parenting causes Liane to become visibly angry at the other parents. When the other parents literally make a spectacle out of Cartman being hogtied to get his shot, she punches Stephen in the face, kicks Sheila, and then beats up every man trying to hold Cartman up for his shot.
  • Big "NO!": Cartman at the end of the episode, complete with an Extreme Close-Up.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with Cartman in the clinic about to take his vaccine shot.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Both vaxxers and anti-vaxxers get equal treatment in this episode. The former talks about the benefits for everyone with vaccinations while the latter are genuinely terrified of the side effects that could come with them, real or otherwise.
  • Chekhov's Gag: When stating why he refuses to get the shot, Cartman reads from a script, believing that the shot would "make me artistic". When Liane gets Eric's shot not meant for her, she is seen in the doctor's office painting a picture.
  • Grew a Spine: After spending the entire episode suffering Cartman's usual mistreatment of her and the other parents' judgment on her parenting, Liane stands up to both the other parents for taking matters into their own hands and Cartman by not letting him get a toy until he gets his shot.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Kyle seemed happy upon hearing that Cartman can't go to school until he gets his vaccination shot, only to be disappointed upon seeing Cartman coming to school immediately afterwards.
    • The episode ends with Cartman at the doctor's office seemingly willing to finally get a shot, but is horrified to find out that vaccines made his mother artistic.
  • Injection Plot: Discusses the controversy over vaccinations and autism.
  • Jerkass: Randy buys a parade float with a large statue of the figure "$300K" on it, then drives it across the middle of town while shouting in a megaphone about how much money he has. He also throws beads and weed on the floor, leaving a public sanitation worker to sweep up after him.
  • Lack of Empathy: Randy couldn't care less that the Chinese government is using his weed to frame protesters for drug possession as long as he's making money.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Towelie forces Randy to say "Fuck the Chinese government" In-Universe as proof the latter will discontinue his business with them. Out of universe, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are saying it in defiance after the show was Banned in China following the previous episode.
    • The episode opens with Randy celebrating with a cake and singing "Happy 300 to us". It refers to the Marsh family and Tegridy Farms earning 300 thousand dollars selling to China, while also being the 300th episode of South Park aired.
  • Let's See YOU Do Better!: When accused of being a bad mother, Liane flips out and dares them to try to get her son a vaccination if they think they can do what she can't.
  • Malaproper: Cartman's written statement for Liane uses "artistic" instead of "autistic."
  • Mama Bear: Liane fights both the other parents and the hog-tiers to save her son from getting a vaccination shot against his will.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Every time Cartman is about to get a shot, he acts like a pig to the point of stripping himself naked and running around while squealing - at one point, even coating himself with grease.
  • Near-Villain Victory: After spending almost the entire episode running away from vaccine shots, Cartman is finally captured by pig wrangler Big Mesquite Murph, and he would have gotten his shot had Liane not intervened.
  • Pet the Dog: After Liane's meltdown at the meeting, Stephen offers to give her a break and organizes the other parents into getting Cartman a shot. Not that it goes well, though.
  • Political Overcorrectness: Continuing from the Take That! in the last episode at people who ignore the crimes of second and third world dictatorships while calling the U.S. evil when it does anything, Randy accuses his family of being racist for disapproving of China. More specifically, disapproving of the Chinese government paying Randy to murder Winnie the Pooh.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: PC Principal is concerned first and foremost with the safety of his students, and he's even willing to accommodate Cartman's ridiculous demands to ensure that. His patience has limits, though, and he's forced to simply ban Cartman from the school until he gets immunized.
  • Series Continuity Error: Cartman claims to have never taken a shot before, despite having taken a needle shot in previous episodes like "Tonsil Trouble" and "The Snuke".
  • Stealth Pun: Cartman acting like a wild boar (and being shaped like one) could be seen as Matt and Trey calling him a pig. It also likely references Swine Flu.
  • Take That!:
    • Towards anti-vaxxers, despite the nuanced take on them with South Park's over-the-top humor on fear towards them. They are represented by Cartman, who is Afraid of Needles, so he goes all the way to avoid getting shot, from referencing stock claims to outright dodging the needles.
    • Vaxxers are not spared either, this time being represented by adults (especially redneck farmers) who degrade unvaccinated children, treating them like wild animals to be hunted in closed enclosure as an entertaining sport.
    • Continuing from last week's episode, China's censorship continues to get made fun of. Towelie refuses to forgive Randy until he agrees to no longer do business with them (which to his credit, he does).
    • It also makes a subtle jab at the War on Drugs, with the Chinese government exploiting the availability of Randy's marijuana products for mass arrests as a reflection on mass-incarceration from strict drug laws.
