Celebrating 75 issues full of side-story goodness, and adventures that are just too big for the main series!
Rouge informs the Freedom Fighters of the final [cyan] Chaos Emerald found by GUN, but Metal Sonic gets there first before they have a chance to secure it.

As Sonic chases after his mechanical double, they find themselves whisked through another dimension thanks to one of the Genesis Portals.

Now teaming up with Silver the Hedgehog, who is busy hunting down and closing the Portals, Sonic must try to beat Metal, get the Emerald back and make his way back home. But something is puzzling him in a way that can only be answered by the time traveler.

Tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: With Silver's help, Sonic snags the cyan Chaos Emerald from Metal Sonic before sending the robot to another dimension. He makes his way back to his own world so he and his friends can continue their mission to restore itnote .
  • Call-Back: This is the second time Sonic and Silver dealt with a Genesis Portal situation. The first was "Into the Unknown", a Free Comic Book Day exclusive story.
  • Call-Forward: While Silver knows how to deal with the Genesis Portals, he wouldn't learn of them until his own story arc "The Silver Age", set 200 years after the Worlds Collide event. "Into the Unknown" shows a scene that would be used again in that arc, where a scientist explains that these portals were born from that incident.
  • Driving Question: Sonic wonders if there is a chance of putting their world back together, since he admits he is partly to blame for the it breaking apart. Silver doesn't give out a straight answer, but allows Sonic to figure it out himself.
  • Hypocrite: Sonic asks Silver if he and his friends will succeed in fixing their world. Silver refuses to give out a definitive answer without risking any time-space anomalies. Sonic calls Silver out on this because he is all about changing the past, but Silver responds that it's only to fix his future.
  • Immediate Sequel: Takes place shortly after the main story "Ray of Hope".
  • Logical Weakness: As usual, Metal Sonic is handcrafted by Eggman to match, counter, and surpass Sonic in speed and power. Even though Metal has been beaten many times, he is known to be stubborn and persistent. The fact that he rarely ever stops allows Sonic to trick him into going through a random Genesis Portal as he pumps the breaks himself.
  • Screw Destiny: Silver finally talks to Sonic about his future or, in this case, saving the their world from its current state: If they are destined to succeed then they'll make sure that stays true. He then asks Sonic if he would accept a future where they would fail, no matter how hard they try. Sonic takes a moment to think about that possibility and responds:
Sonic: Nah. That'd just mean I'd fight destiny, too.
