Tropes present in the episode:

  • Antagonist Title: The episode's title refers to Black Canary, who starts out working for Lex.
  • The Bus Came Back: Oliver returns to Metropolis after leaving at the end of "Justice," though he leaves again with new Justice League member Dinah.
  • Ear Ache: Black Canary's sonic scream causes Clark's ears to bleed.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Clark very jealous about Lana seemingly being happier with Bizarro.
  • Gun Kata: Lex during his fight with Green Arrow and Black Canary.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Black Canary starts out working for Lex, but she switches sides and joins the Justice League after learning Lex's true colors.
  • Hired Guns: Black Canary is one to Lex, until she turns on him.
  • Hypocrite: Clark is worried Chloe is putting herself in danger by helping Oliver when he points out she already put's herself in danger when she helps Clark.
  • Internal Reveal: Lois discovers Oliver is the Green Arrow.
  • Mythology Gag: When speaking with Lex Luthor, Black Canary refers to Green Arrow as the "Emerald Archer," which is the Red Baron of Green Arrow in the comics.
  • No-Sell: At the end of their first meeting, Black Canary attempts a martial arts kick against Clark, which works about as well as you'd expect. She does better with her sonic scream follow-up.
  • Super-Scream: Black Canary's power.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Oliver does this to Clark, calling him out for staying on the farm and living a quiet life rather than going out and stopping crime.
Oliver: You know, some of us sacrifice being with the people that we really care about so that we can go make a difference. What do you do? You sit around in domestic bliss, curled up on a couch while a world of trouble spins outside your door!
    • Clark calls Lana out for being honest with him only when she's threatened, and Lana likewise calls him out for the unrealistic standards he sets for everyone.
Clark: I can't do this, Lana. You're only honest with me when you're threatened.
Lana: I don't know what else to say to you. I thought that he was you.
Clark: You're supposed to know me better than anyone.
Lana: And that's why you're here with me right now.
Clark: But it was easier with him, wasn't it?
Lana: Yes. It was easier, Clark. He was more affectionate. He was more understanding. Is that really what you want to hear? I can't even look at you without you taking it the wrong way.
Clark: Because you're looking at me like you wished I was someone else.
Lana: Every transgression that I have made, you have answered with a hypocritical judgment. No one can live up to your self-righteous standards. Do you have any idea how it feels to wake up every morning, knowing that you're gonna fail in the eyes of the only person you've ever really loved?
Clark: And you're the one who fell in love with Lex and then fell for that killer. I don't think it's me you can't face.
  • Villain of the Week: Black Canary but she has a Heel–Face Turn.
