Recap / Skylanders Academy S3 E10 "Off to the Races"

Go To

Written by: Jesse Porter

Kaos and the Doom Raiders enter the Skylands 500 to get a crack at the prize money after their many failures at finding treasure. In response to this, Kaossandra appoints the Skylanders to enter the race as well to keep the Doom Raiders from winning and therefore throw Kaos overboard so they can take him in for rehabilitation. Flynn also joins in, but he and Jet-Vac end up butting heads over how to properly lead the team to victory.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: The Doom Raiders win the race at the end when Strykore prevents Dark Spyro from assisting his teammates.
  • The Big Race: The Team plus Flynn and the Doom Raiders enter The Skylands 500 for varying motivations.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Flynn and Jet-Vac have different ways of coaching the team to push ahead in the race, and both ways have their benefits and drawbacks. Flynn pushes his crewmates with everything he's got so they're always giving their all. While it helps them get ahead in the race, it also comes at the cost of the crewmates becoming exhausted from all the work, putting them right back to being behind. Jet-Vac meanwhile takes a more softer approach, which is to pep the crewmates up with encouragement and playfulness, which helps them move forward at a steady pace, but it comes at the cost of the team not taking the race seriously. When the bickering of the two has led the team to being behind in the race yet again, they get their act together after Spyro gives a speech about working together, taking the best aspects of their different methods and combining them into one.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Flynn comes down from the ceiling of the library, Eruptor asks him if he's been there the whole time, to Flynn says yes because he hadn't had much work the last couple of days, which can be a reference to how he hadn't had major appearances the last couple of episodes.
  • Morton's Fork: The Doom Raiders warn Kaos that if they lose the race, he will be thrown overboard. They do win, but decide to throw Kaos overboard anyway because now that they have money, they no longer need a captain.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: After learning that to open a Wumpan Puzzle Box he needs to be pure of heart, Dark Spyro is trying to be the one who keeps the team together when they bicker just so that the box is gonna open for him, not because he’s genuinely trying to help everyone cooperate better.
  • Skewed Priorities: As the Skylanders and Doom Raiders are head-to-toe towards the finish line, Eon lets out that he cares more about the fact that he bet fifty bucks on their victory than having faith in them winning, to which Kaossandra shoots him a glare.
  • Wham Episode: After nine episodes of being The Mole, Dark Spyro's role as Strykore’s underling is uncovered by the Skylanders.
  • Wham Line: When Strykore stalls Spyro from returning to Flynn with the tool he needs, Stealth Elf says a line that lets the audience know that shit is about to go down.
Flynn: What's taking Spyro with that lemonhead screwdriver?
Stealth Elf: I'll go check on him.
  • X Must Not Win: This is the Skylanders' entire goal, win so that the Doom Raiders won't and they will commit a mutiny towards Kaos.
