Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: At one point, Rhodey threatens to have Fury defenestrated.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's left unrevealed when Rhodey was replaced by his Skrull doppelganger. Was it at the beginning of this series? Earlier in the post-Endgame MCU, such as during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier? Or was Rhodey replaced as far back as the Infinity Saga?
  • Bait-and-Switch: A female Skrull is seen in a shower, leading the audience to believe it's G'iah...and then she transforms into Rhodey.
  • Batman Gambit: Fury gets Rhodey's Skrull impersonator to drink the bourbon that spiked with nanotechnology trackers so he and Talos can track her in time to thwart the assassination of the President.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Gravik has the President's motorcade on the back foot until Fury and Talos ride in, shooting down his remaining helicopter and rallying the defenders.
  • Big "NO!": Fury yells one when Gravik kills Talos.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Fury skillfully kills several enemies by shooting them in the head to protect the President. It's less effective against Gravik, who has his cheek blown off and simply regenerates.
  • Broken Masquerade: When an injured Talos attempts to break into Ritson's crashed vehicle, a British soldier spots his Glamour Failure and realises he's an alien. Fury manages to persuade him that they're on the same side, but whether this will have any wider repercussions remains to be seen.
  • Bullet Holes and Revelations: At the end of their conversation, Fury and Varra each grab their guns and fire at the same time. The screen whites out, and after panning around the house for a while, it cuts to Varra perfectly unharmed, with Fury having missed... then Fury speaks up, and it turns out Varra missed too.
Fury: I don't know if this is a sign that we should get a divorce, or that we should renew our vows.
  • Character Death: Pagon shoots Talos in the shoulder, and while he has enough strength left to break into President Ritson's vehicle, Gravik sneaks behind the line to pick up Talos and then stabs him when Fury figures out the ruse.
  • Continuity Nod: When we see the flashback of Fury and Varra in 2012, she brings along a newspaper with a headline on the Battle of New York.
  • Crazy-Prepared: It is revealed that before G'iah was confronted and shot by Gravik, she empowered herself with Extremis to so she could be able to heal from her wound.
  • Drinking on Duty: The Skrull taking over Rhodey does this when finishing the bottle of Fury's bourbon since the following scene shows "Rhodey" as part of the president's security detail. Ritson smells it on his breath and is not amused.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: Both Fury and Varra throw their shots.
Fury: I don't know if this means we should get divorced or if we should renew our vows.
  • Faking the Dead: G'iah used the infusion device to turn herself into a Super Skrull prior to her encounter with Gravik, allowing him to think he killed her and healing from the injury later.
  • False Flag Operation: While the presidential motorcade is on its way to an emergency summit between the US and Russia, Gravik's men attack it under the guise of Russian soldiers. Ritson survives, but dozens of his agents are killed, and Russia may end up being held responsible.
  • Fan Disservice: Normally, seeing a woman dry herself off after taking a shower would be appealing for many viewers... except in this case, she's a green, reptilian alien who then immediately shapeshifts into a man.
  • Glamour Failure: After taking a bullet to the shoulder, Talos has trouble maintaining his human form, causing him to partially revert to his natural state. This freaks out one of the soldiers protecting the President, but Nick Fury talks him down.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Fury is near tears when he learns his wife is working with Gravik and has been tasked with killing him.
  • Hellish Copter: Gravik's operation involves two helicopters, both of which get shot down in spectacular and violent crashes — the explosion of the first kills several agents, while the second just stops short of crashing into the vehicle the unconscious President Ritson is trapped in. Averted with the four helicopters the British Army send in as backup, as the episode ends just before they arrive.
  • Meaningful Echo: In a flashback to 2012, Fury and Varra recite Raymond Carver's "Late Fragment" to one another. In the present day, after Varra explains how she came to impersonate Priscilla, they recite the poem again.
  • No-Sell: Thanks to now being a Super Skrull, Gravik casually shrugs off being shot multiple times by Fury, including a shot to the head.
  • Not Quite Dead: G'iah is revealed to have enhanced herself with Extremis, and therefore survived being shot by Gravik.
  • Oh, Crap!: Fury's entire confrontation with Gravik is this, from being Forced to Watch as Gravik kills another of his allies in front of him, to realizing that Gravik has imbued himself with Extremis and is now that much harder to kill.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Fury's expression of pure horror and pain upon losing Talos to Gravik is the most emotion he's ever shown in the years he's been active.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: "Rhodey" demands his bodyguard open the door to his car and then close it behind him, despite the bodyguard nursing a broken arm. The real Rhodey, who's been paralyzed since Civil War, would obviously never be so inconsiderate to any man under his command let alone one injured in the line of duty.
  • Properly Paranoid: The Skrull impersonating Rhodey is suspicious of Fury's bourbon, correctly believing it's been tampered with and refusing to drink at first. When she thinks she has the upper hand, however, she gulps it down as a power move, playing right into Fury's hands.
  • The Reveal:
    • It was already implied last episode, but this episode makes it clear: Rhodey has been replaced by a Skrull.
    • G'iah enhanced herself with Extremis before her escape from the compound, and thus survived being shot by Gravik.
  • Rewatch Bonus: All of Rhodey's scenes throughout the previous episodes, knowing now that he was really a Skrull infiltrator.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Rhodey's not only been replaced by a Skrull, but a female Skrull at that.
  • Sarcastic Confession: Fury, knowing Rhodey is a Skrull, breaks into his hotel room to talk things out over a bottle of expensive bourbon. When Rhodey asks if he should worry about poison, Fury jokingly suggests that he should worry about nanotech instead. Afterwards, it turns out there really was nanotech in the bourbon, allowing Fury and Talos to track Rhodey and prevent his and Gravik's next move.
  • Spot the Impostor: Gravik attempts to pose as an allied soldier by grabbing Talos and bringing him to Fury's car. The ruse fails because that same soldier freaked out upon seeing Talos revert to Skrull form when Pagon shot him, so Fury knows he wouldn't suddenly go out of his way to take the wounded man to safety. Fury shoots the "soldier", prompting Gravik to drop the disguise and stab Talos in the chest.
  • Trespassing to Talk: Fury breaks into Rhodey's hotel to under the pretense of warning him about the Skrull infiltration, but in fact has slipped a nanotech tracker into his drink.
  • Uncertain Doom: The fate of the real Rhodey after he was replaced by his doppelganger remains unrevealed.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Talos's plan boils down to "Let's save the president to show him how great we are and then everything will be peachy." G'iah calls him out on this.
