Recap / Scooby Doo And Guess Who S 1 E 13 What A Night For A Dark Knight

Go To

The gang drives to Gotham to visit Daphne's favorite Honorary Uncle, Alfred Pennyworth, only to find him missing. Despite Batman's insistence that they keep their distance, the group of mystery-solving teens starts investigating and finds the truth about what happened to Alfred...a truth that turns out to be more dangerous than they anticipated.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bill... Bill... Junk... Bill...: The Batman crossover starts with Alfred checking the mail. Upon finding an actual letter among the bills (the one from Daphne), Alfred stops to wonder who writes letters nowadays.
  • The Cameo: At Arkham Asylum, the Arnold Wesker version of the Ventriloquist (with Scarface) and Poison Ivy make silent cameos.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: The Joker attempts to torture Alfred into giving up the passwords to Bruce Wayne's bank accounts...by having a machine continually bonk him in the face with tennis balls.
  • Crossover Relatives: Alfred Pennyworth is Daphne Blake's Honorary Uncle in the Batman crossover episode.
  • Distracted by the Luxury: Daphne gets sidetracked by all the clothing that was left behind when Miller and Frank Department Store closed, despite Fred's attempts to get her to focus.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Played With. Man-Bat is unmasked to reveal Kirk Langstrom, but Batman denies it because he saw Langstrom locked up in the asylum earlier. Under the Langstrom mask is Alfred, but then he lets out a familiar crazed cackle, and is unmasked to reveal the Joker, who comments about the downside of wearing all those rubber masks.
The Joker: Those masks were SO hot, like my face was living in the tropics! Not in a good way, if you know what I mean!
  • Hijacked by Ganon: It appears the main villain is Man-Bat, a lesser-used villain from Batman's rogue gallery the Mystery Inc hasn't faced before. By the end, it is revealed it was actually Joker, Batman's Arch-Enemy and the most frequent foe he faces when teaming up with Scooby and the gang, disguised as Man-Bat.
  • Hollywood Hacking: Velma somehow managed to hack into the Bat-belt for long enough to get Batman's cell phone number while Batman was distracted intimidating Shaggy and Scooby.
  • Honorary Uncle: Alfred is revealed to be one for Daphne, having served as part of her family's polo team and as a substitute butler during one particular summer.
  • It's Personal: The gang (besides Shaggy and Scooby) are on board with the investigation from the start, but Fred declares it's reached a whole different level after Man-Bat captures Velma.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: Kirk Langstrom seems friendly enough. However, mid-"visit", he turns into Man-Bat and starts savagely clawing the walls, before returning to Langstrom, who's sad that the "visit" wasn't longer.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Not Me This Time: Batman goes to Arkham Asylum to confront the staff about why he wasn't told that Man-Bat escaped...only for them to reveal that he's been in his cell the entire time.
  • Wham Line: As Man-Bat is unmasked, it's revealed to be Kirk Langstrom. But that can't be right! He was in his cell at Arkham! So Scooby pulls off another mask to reveal...Alfred? Daphne is shocked! But then he let's out a familiar, crazed cackle...
