Jack vs. Demongo the Soul Collector

Episode numeral: XXIII

Original air date: 9/20/02 (produced in 2001)

As Jack continues to undermine his rule, Aku summons and sends out his most powerful minion: Demongo, a demon who can summon the souls of those warriors he has defeated to fight on his behalf.

  • And I Must Scream: When Jack enters Demongo, he learns that all of the warriors are fully aware of their predicament. When one of them sees Jack, you can tell that he's begging him for help.
  • As You Know: Oddly enough, the episode starts with Aku giving another recap of the series' general premise, even though he already does that every time in the opening credits. He and Demongo also monologue a bunch about what the latter's powers are, even though they're the only ones in the room.
  • Broken Win/Loss Streak: According to Aku, Demongo has consistently done his bidding and defeated and absorbed every warrior that opposed him. When he inevitably fails against Jack and loses the essence of all his previous victims in the process, Demongo instantly loses favour with Aku and is disposed of.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Once freed, Demongo's former warriors ganged up on him and presumably, rip him to pieces.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While fighting for his life, Jack continues to figure out how to stop Demongo from using the warriors' essences but then it hits him that only by freeing the essences that Demongo loses power.
  • Face Palm: Demongo does this after his first warrior was crushed by a boulder.
  • Forced into Evil: Demongo's warriors who have no choice but to fight for Demongo. When Jack gets inside Demongo, he sees the warrior's faces of agony.
  • Foreshadowing: While commending Demongo's prowess, Aku also adds with an ominous look that he has never failed him, making shrewdly clear he won't be so kind should Demongo break that streak.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Jack hitches a ride on one of the essences Demongo reabsorbs, allowing him to get inside and free the warriors.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Even if Jack beats them all, Demongo is just going to resummon them again and again until he dies. Demongo and even Jack himself knows this.
  • Noodle Incident: Jack has met several of Demongo's warriors before, either during his training or his travels in the future.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Demongo realizes Jack has freed all the souls he has collected.
  • Shout-Out: One of the warriors looks like an obese version of Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
  • Smug Snake: Demongo was extremely cocky during his fight against Jack except on a few occasions when he gets irritated from the Samurai's continued defiance.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Demongo's gimmick; he captures the souls of warriors he's defeated and can summon them to fight his opponents. He has a vast collection, and would like to add Jack as his next soul.
  • You Have Failed Me: After losing to Jack, Aku sees no use for Demongo and, after a short while thinking through, kills him after he pleads for another chance.
