“Finally, a new hero appears. His name is the Moonlight Knight. When Sailor Moon cries for help, floating like the wind he suddenly appears and comes to her aid! Woah! Guess this isn't the time to be talking about that! Listen here you furry, menacing monster! I am Sailor Moon! In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Usagi Tsukino

(DiC Episode: "A Knight To Remember")

Makoto is driven to find and destroy the latest Cardian for hurting a cherished friend of hers. As she regains the strength to do so, Sailor Moon is surprised by the presence of a mysterious, but familiar, new hero who shows up to save her.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • "Arabian Nights" Days: The Moonlight Knight wears an ensemble fit for the heroes from the 1001 Nights. His theme music even suits the aesthetic.
  • Blood Transfusion Plot: Kenji loses a serious amount of blood after the Cardian's attack and the hospital he's taken to has run out of type O blood for his procedure. So Makoto steps up to offer her own blood to save him.
  • Bloodless Carnage: Subverted. Kenji gains a serious head wound that covers his face with blood.
  • Cats Are Mean: The Monster of the Week is the Furry Cardian, Falion. A pink lion who attacks people for their energy.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: The beginning of the episode has Ami scolding Usagi for wanting to cheat while warning her that it'll only hurt her in the long run.
  • Dreadful Musician: In the DIC dub, Anne tries to seduce Darien with her singing, but she’s clearly never heard of the concept of “tune”.
Serena: Stop right there! Noise Police, citizen’s arrest.
  • Dub Name Change: The DiC dub shortens Kenji's name to just "Ken".
  • Flashback: Makoto recalls the time her senpai dumped her on a rainy day only for Kenji to come by and help her out.
  • Friendship Moment: Upon seeing her friend in a weakened state after her donation, Sailor Moon begs Jupiter to go home and rest out of fear that she could die if she's not careful. While Jupiter is touched by her thoughtfulness, she still intends to fight to put an end to the Cardian. And while unhappy with her decision, Moon accepts her resolve and asks her to be careful.
  • Freudian Slip: Ail refers to the Sailor Guardians as lovely which An catches on to.
  • Handicapped Badass: Sailor Jupiter is significantly weak after donating a large portion of blood to her friend. Despite this setback, she's able to handle herself fine and even delivers the finishing blow to the big furry.
  • Happy Rain: Makoto was having a good time enjoying the rainy weather before her senpai broke up with her, turning it into Gray Rain of Depression. It turns happy though when Kenji shows up to cheer her up.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Kenji pushes Makoto out of Falion's warpath which unintentionally leads to him taking a fall that leaves him concussed.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Makoto informs Usagi that her going to Ami for answers related to an upcoming test will be a hopeless endeavor. Usagi then finds out that she was going to do the same thing to.
  • Image Song: One of Jupiter's image songs, "Anata no Sei Ja Nai (It's Not Your fault)", plays in the background during her flashback.
  • Insert Song: The DiC dub uses "Rainy Day Man" in place of the original Japanese song during Lita's flashback.
  • It's Personal: Makoto is hellbent on taking revenge against the Cardian and its masters for hospitalizing Kenji.
  • Mood Whiplash: The last scene has Usagi reflecting on Makoto and Kenji's friendship along with the strange circumstances surrounding the Moonlight Knight. But her thoughts are cut off when Luna reminds her about her upcoming test.
  • No Full Name Given: An odd example with Kenji. In the original Japanese version of the episode, he's only referred to as Shinozaki, his family name. As the German, Latin American Spanish, and Viz's English dub all refer to him as "Kenji", Toei had given him a full name but never used it in the episode itself.
  • No Name Given: Falion does not have a name in the DiC dub and is simply referred to as "the lion".
  • Once Upon a Time: Usagi starts her story to Mamoru with this phrase.
  • The One That Got Away: Makoto goes into detail over how her infamous senpai broke her heart.
  • Past-Life Memories: In order to activate Mamoru's memories, Usagi tries to use a makeshift picture story detailing their past lives along with the fall of the Moon Kingdom.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: Makoto describes Kenji as being a special guy who's always been there to support her. And despite her romantism, she never saw him as a potential boyfriend. Just a precious friend.
  • Seers: Rei uses her fire reading ability to predict where Falion will strike next.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Falion was made male in the DiC dub.
  • Skewed Priorities: Usagi puts more effort in making her picture set for Mamoru rather then on preparing for her upcoming test.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Mamoru vanishes from public while Usagi is busy sharing her fairy tale.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: The Moonlight Knight serves as a replacement for Tuxedo Mask who shows up to help Sailor Moon when she's in peril while giving romanticized speeches. He even throws roses colored white when making his grand entrance.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Sailor Jupiter claims that Falion attacking Sailor Moon and Kenji are actions that she'll never forgive.
