Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: S.W.A.T. assumes the robbery crew's target is the Los Angeles branch of the U.S. Federal Reserve, but it turns out they're going after a shredding facility where worn out dollars bills are destroyed to prevent currency devaluation, with minimal security they can overpower.
  • I Have Your Wife: The robbers got their weapons by blackmailing a Marine with access to the armoury by threatening to kill his kids. Once they got their weapons, they killed him.
  • Noodle Incident: Hondo mentions the reason he left the Marines was guilt over shooting a child soldier in Somalia and being reminded of how many black kids he saw gunned down growing up in L.A.
  • Semper Fi: Directly invoked by Hondo.
Hondo: I may be a cop now, but semper fi still runs in my veins!
Ruiz: Then prove it, [indicates the dead Marine the robbers murdered] and find the bastards who killed that kid.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: The bank robbers are using anti-tank weapons stolen from a U.S. Army base.
  • True Companions: Deacon confesses about his financial problems to Hondo and Luca. They pay off the Loan Shark haranguing him and make it plain if the guy hassles Deacon again, they'll be back to straighten him out.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Marine Staff Sergeant Ruiz, who served together with Hondo in the Marines in Somalia, and is still sore about Hondo leaving the Marines.
  • What You Are in the Dark: When the robbers crash their car and flee, Deacon is tempted to steal a few stacks of hundred dollar bills from the wreckage while there are no witnesses to pay off his debts. He later confesses to Hondo that he threw the money back into the burning vehicle the second after he took it, realising if he'd kept the money, he'd have crossed the line into becoming something he despises.
