Recap / SMG4 - The Very Safe & Legal SMG4 Show

Go To

The SMG4 crew has to put on the GREATEST show ever so they can raise some money to build that new castle.

With no money to get the necessary materials to build SMG4's castle, the crew try to think up new ways to earn some cash. SMG4 eventually comes up with the brilliant idea of performing a makeshift circus act, but with problems arising during practice and Melony struggling to find a good enough role, can our favorite crew of clowns put on a successful show?

  • An Aesop: When you're doing something to make money, don't forget about your initial investments.
  • Blackmail: SMG4 pulls this on SMG3 to get the latter to participate in his circus. He holds up a folder labeled "SMG3 Totally Not Sussy Internet History". Since we already know SMG3 is a regular visitor to the dark web, it's no surprise he immediately gives in.
  • Call-Back: Mario's Lemonade (or "Lemonaids") Stand appears for the first time since its titular episode over four years earlier, now with Meggy assisting Mario instead of Tari (who's off to the side playing with Archibald).
  • The Cameo: Pomni makes a brief appearance when SMG4 accidentally summons her. Her reaction is due to this paralleling how Caine summoned her, before SMG4 sends her back, saying it's the wrong show.
  • Casting Gag: Pomni is voiced during her cameo by Elsie Lovelock, who also voices Meggy as per usual. In The Amazing Digital Circus proper, Pomni is instead voiced by Lizzie Freeman, who was Meggy's previous voice actress.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Were it not for Depresso nonchalantly throwing Arnold the Dummy out of the garbage bin while dumpster diving, Melony wouldn't have been able to "win over" the crowd with her ventriloquist act.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Melony's act with Arnold the Dummy causes the entire audience to cringe to the point they all explode into coins, which SMG4 immediately scoops up as he congratulates Melony.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Really, nobody in the gang thought anything through in this episode, but special bonus goes to Meggy and Tari who spent so much time training Isaac The Lion, he was too tired to perform during the show itself.
  • Epic Fail: The whole show, in short.
    • Mario and Luigi's juggling act seems to be going well enough as Mario spices it up by throwing dangerous implements at Luigi to juggle... until he throws a black hole. Luigi is promptly sucked in, and Mario gets his head cut off by an errant chainsaw, to his minor annoyance.
    • Bob attempts a daredevil jump but manages to crash his motorcycle into a post and explode before he even makes it to the ramp.
    • Meggy and Tari's lion taming act doesn't even get started thanks to the girls practicing so hard that the lion is fast asleep by showtime.
  • Groin Attack: Once SMG4 forces Mario, SMG3, and Bob to let go of Depresso, the angry clown gives SMG3 a hard kick in the family jewels, causing the poor man to grab a microphone and let out a deafening scream of pain:
    SMG3: Ohhh my eggdogs...
  • Insult to Rocks: In response to SMG4's poor housing, Bob – who lives in a literal garbage dump – asks if the gang wants to just hang out at his place. Almost everyone immediately agrees and starts walking away until Meggy asks SMG4 a couple of questions that kick off the story.
  • Lemonade Stand Plot: Defied. The gang try this but, with The Showgrounds being so far from anything, the only person who shows up is Depresso The Clown (his first appearance since the 2022 Christmas Special).
  • Major Injury Underreaction:
    • Melony gets a thrown kunai to the forehead courtesy of Mario when she accidentally steps between him and Luigi at the worst possible time. She is only mildly irritated at having to exert some minimal effort to pull it out.
    • After Luigi is sucked into the mini black hole, the chainsaw he was juggling cuts Mario's head off. Mario is upset about the act failing and calls for the next act as his head hops away.
Mario: "Dammit… Welp… Next act." (voice clip: "Well that was sure fun. How 'bout you suck my pinus?")
  • Off with His Head!: Mario, as mentioned above. This is of course so normal for him he doesn't react.
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Pomni says this verbatim when SMG4 accidentally summons her right as she's about to eat something, just like what Caine did in the teaser for her show.
  • Reality Warper: Mario, of course. Even after he'd already forced Luigi to start juggling knives and a chainsaw, he decides to rip open a portal to the Void and pull out a miniature black hole for Luigi's act. That goes about as well as Luigi expects.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: While SMG4 does make progress in building his dream castle, SMG3 points out that after subtracting the cost of the set props, he only has enough money left for furniture.
  • Shout-Out: While Melony walks by Bob and Boopkins practicing for the show, Bob can be heard saying, "When this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious..." before an explosion cuts him off.
  • Stylistic Suck:invoked
    • While the gang await a customer for Mario's Lemonaids, a tumbleweed moves across the screen. That is, a stock photo of a tumbleweed is dragged across the 2D front-most layer of the scene with its box and X/Y coordinates clearly visible.
    • Tari's (successful) attempt to tame Isaac The Lion culminates with it rotating alternately on its vertical and horizontal axes. Tari, excited, immediately joins in. Meggy does soon after. All are poorly layered over each other and the background.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Sort of. Glitch got Wolfychu in to record some new voice-bank lines for Melony, making her similar to Tari. Melony now calls (most) characters by name and continuously uses her dedicated subtitle font that had previously only been seen when she spoke full sentences (e.g. Revelations Arc and the 2022 Xmas Special).
  • Your Mom: Arnold's idea of a joke during his banter with Melony.
