Recap / SMG4 - My Roommate Mario

Go To

With the castle gone SMG4 has to move in with Mario, but he ain't exactly the best roommate 🤡

Mario invites SMG4 to live with him after Peach's Castle is destroyed for good due to a series of events. However, he is far from the best roommate, a lesson SMG4 concedes with the hard way after putting up with his troublesome behavior...

Tropes:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: For all the crap, threats, and trouble he puts Luigi through, Mario does give him a genuine "thank you" for looking and cleaning up after him, and the two happily hug it out.
  • Bait-and-Switch: As Mario prepares to eat his column of spaghetti plates, he pulls out a knife and fork… only to throw them to the side, slither up the plates like as if were a tree, and swallow them without chewing from the top one on down.
    SMG4: "Nothing unusual…"
  • Berserk Button: SMG4 finds out the hard way that Mario doesn't kindly to those who interrupt his nose accordion recitations.
  • Big Eater: Mario, of course. Here, he eats 61 plates of spaghetti by devouring them whole (plates included). After that, he's still hungry enough to want SMG4's cereal, leading to the taser incident listed below.
  • Brand X: SMG4's cereal is Grug Brand "Pebbles", which looks like literal gravel and has realistic art of a Neanderthal on the box – a parody of the Flintstones-themed cereal.
  • Brick Joke: Luigi leaves a taser for SMG4 to fight off Mario with should he try to steal his cereal. When Mario succeeds in stealing SMG4's cereal, he begins wolfing it down... along with the taser by accident.
  • The Bus Came Back: This episode is the first time one of the cows has prominently appeared since their debut way back in "Mario Goes to the Fridge to Get a Glass Of Milk".
  • Butt-Monkey: Luigi serves as this for a good amount of the episode. Upon SMG4 arriving, it's revealed that Mario didn't tell Luigi they'd be having a guest. Mario then tries to steal Luigi's bed to give to SMG4, and when the latter two object, Mario removes Luigi and sends him to a demonic void.
  • Call-Back:
    • Luigi's RV from "Breaking Luigi" appears again, with Luigi that he still cooks memes in it.
    • Elon Musk is revealed to still be trapped in Mario's basement since "Mario Goes on a Diet".
  • Continuity Snarl:
    • Mario reveals to SMG4 that he doesn't have a bathroom despite a handful of occasions beforehand where he had one, namely "Mario Runs Out of Toilet Paper".
    • Luigi claims to own the RV in which he still cooks memes that Mario lets SMG4 "borrow", but it was originally shown during the Lawsuit Arc to belong to (or was "borrowed" by) SMG4 himself. Luigi only ended up in possession of it later in the story after he and SMG4 split up.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Just in case Mario got greedy and tried to steal SMG4's cereal, Luigi left a taser in the cereal box for him to ward off Mario with.
  • Eldritch Location: Mario zaps Luigi to one filled with nightmarish images, terrifying sounds, and Picolas Cage.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Mario steals SMG4's cereal and wolfs it down immediately, not noticing SMG4 had dropped the taser in the bowl, resulting in Mario getting shocked. Again.
  • Living Crashpad: Upon emerging from the void Mario sent him to, Luigi accidentally lands on SMG4.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Why was Luigi dressed as a maid while cleaning?
  • Shout-Out: The place Mario sends Luigi to is quite similar to the "fly of despair" from the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Shanghaied": An incredibly long drop filled with nightmarish creatures on all sides designed to torture the falling victim until they fall back to their home.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: The episode seemingly ends with SMG4 leaving to attempt to find a new home alone, only for Mario to come in driving Luigi's meme selling RV, which Luigi lets SMG4 use as his temporary home after Mario "convinces" him.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Luigi is shown to wear a maid outfit while cleaning up around the house. He tries to tell Mario why when asked, but is interrupted by SMG4 showing up.
