Recap / SMG4 - Mario Goes Bowling

Go To

Mario goes BOWLING & Meggy and him have a f̶r̶i̶e̶n̶d̶l̶y̶ competition 🎳
SMG4 shares his bowling hobby with Mario and Meggy, who quickly take a liking to the sport. However, Meggy finds her self to be unusually inept at bowling, while Mario proves to be a natural talent. When Mario lets his superiority over Meggy go to his head, Meggy must perfect her skills to knock him down a peg.

Formerly known as "Bowling For Dummies" and "Stupid Mario Bowling".

  • Amusingly Awful Aim: As it turns out, while she's a strong Action Girl and is good at almost every sport and activity imaginable, Meggy sucks at bowling due to not being able to aim the ball well.
  • Artistic License – Physics: During Mario and Meggy's ball throwing at the beginning, their bowling balls fly around quite easily, with Meggy even treating hers like a baseball. Real bowling balls are quite dense and heavy, and not at all aerodynamic.
  • Blatant Lies: Mario claims sports aren't Meggy's thing as an excuse to bowl instead of her.
  • Bowling for Ratings: This episode centers around SMG4, Mario and Meggy going bowling, leading to conflict between the latter two.
  • Call-Back: Meggy's bowling training montage shows her as a student in Omnia Academy for the first time since "MARIO BALLIN?!?!".
  • Epic Fail:
    • When Meggy tries throwing the ball, she throws it so hard it flies up, makes a hole in the ceiling, and causes Old Man Hobo to fall from a higher floor down to the bowling alley.
    • Later, Meggy loads the ball into her splattershot and shoots it down the lane. It rolls in a straight line right at the pins, then abruptly moves to the left at the last second.
    • Even later on, Meggy throws the ball so hard that it flies off-course and lands a strike on Mario's lane while not touching a single one of her own pins.
  • Head Crushing: When Meggy throws the bowling ball, it ends up ricocheting and flattening Mario's head.
  • Hidden Depths: This episode reveals that, despite his idiocy and all of his weaknesses, Mario is a natural at bowling.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Meggy's throw during the tournament has her fire her bowling ball from her cupped, outstretched hands, causing a massive explosion of energy that reduces Mario to bones. For bonus points, she even screams out "KA... ME... HA... ME... HAAAAAAAAA!!!" just like one of the Trope Namers.
  • Metafictional Device: SMG4 pulls down a black bar over the screen to transition to Mario and Meggy's bowling tournament.
  • Parodies for Dummies: The episode's original title was "Bowling For Dummies", an obvious joke on the episode centering on Meggy learning to be a good bowler. Ironically, every good play her and Mario make relies on copious amounts of cartoon logic and thus isn't helpful as a guide whatsoever.
  • Retcon: This episode shows that Mario is actually a natural at bowling, even though "Stupid Mario Sports Mix" made it clear he wasn't even smart enough to know not to stick his head in the ball return machine, forget actually being good at the game. Though considering four years have passed between the episodes, he might have gotten better offscreen.
  • Shout-Out: SMG4's bowling tutorial is a recreation of the bowling game from Wii Sports. When Mario tries it, he accidentally drops it backwards and causes several Miis to panic, another thing that can happen in the bowling game.
  • Showdown at High Noon: Parodied. Mario and Meggy's bowling tournament begins with them facing each other wearing cowboy hats while the lighting is yellowed and Western music plays. A tumbleweed even blows between them.
  • Skewed Priorities: After multiple failures, Meggy falls to the ground in the fetal position, sadly declaring she's never been this bad at anything before. Cue SMG4 having shell-shocked flashbacks to the many instances of Meggy being a Lethal Chef.
  • Stripped to the Bone: Meggy's ball throw during the tournament causes an explosion that turns Mario into a skeleton.
  • Underdogs Never Lose: Throughout the episode, Mario easily gets perfect strikes and Meggy can't even hit one pin. During their tournament at the end, Meggy ends up beating Mario by a single pin difference.
