Recap / SMG4 - If Mario Was Smart

Go To

What would happen if Mario was actually smart?

Formerly titled "Smart Mario".

  • Call-Back: To "smart(ass) mario," the first time Mario became smart. Although the crystal that made him "smart" only stole much of Mario's memories, and was never at the levels Smart Mario is in this episode.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It's no surprise that the gang would want to do something about Mario after putting up with him for so long, but they only acknowledge his stupidity and completely forget about all of his other negative traits (insanity, destructiveness, egocentrism, obsession of spaghetti). As a result, Mario becomes more of a menace than usual now that he's no longer mentally stunted.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: Tari hides behind SMG4 during Mario's transformation.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Smart Mario is ridiculous for turning evil over Luigi not giving him his spaghetti, it's not hard to see why he'd be resentful over everyone treating him like an idiot now that he has the emotional maturity to take such insults to heart. The others clamoring about how "the old Mario wouldn't do something like this" is also frankly preposterous as Mario has done far worst things in the past as an idiot.
  • Mood Whiplash: After Mario receives his intelligence, the first thing he does is help his friends with it in a Good-Times Montage. But then the spaghetti comes to town...
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Bubble Bass to Tari, apparently.
  • That Man Is Dead: Smart Mario claims this in response to that the "real" Mario is still in there.
  • You Wake Up in a Room: The episode begins with Mario waking up Strapped to an Operating Table in E. Gadd's lab.
