Recap / SK 8 The Infinity E 03 Undesired Hero

Go To

Reki helps prepare Langa for his beef against Miya with the two trying to figure out how to keep Langa's feet connected to the board. Miya on his end is more focused on trying to prove how he can only handle things on his own because he's the "hero".

Tropes:

  • Big Brother Instinct: When Adam starts to tear down Miya's confidence after he lost, Reki is immediately up to defend the kid who had been nothing but rude to him at that point. He holds up Miya's skateboard and challenges Adam to a beef with his wager being Adam apologizes for being rude to Miya.
  • Chase Scene: Langa and Reki get chased out of parking garage by a policeman, with both of them splitting off and agreeing to meet up at Dope Sketch. The policeman still decides to give chase, but chooses Langa to his horror while Reki cheerfully wishes his friend luck.
  • Child Prodigy: Miya is described as such, and the videos of him competing in tournaments has Oka noting the kid could make the national team.
  • Chilly Reception: When Miya is at school, his old friend doesn't even bother to acknowledge his presence, which only fuels Miya's anger and allows Adam to exploit his low emotional state.
  • Disastrous Demonstration: Subverted. A couple of kids kick their skateboards out in hopes of ruining Miya's demonstration when he's doing a hand-stand on his skateboard. This backfires as he quickly jumps off his board so he ends up gracefully landing on one of the other boards.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Realizing that Miya and Langa may actually have an interesting race, Joe excitedly asks Kaoru to bet on the match. However, this angers Cherry as he doesn't want his real name spoken at S and kicks Joe in retaliation.
  • Easily Forgiven: All of the animosity Reki had towards Shadow in the first episode seems to have vanished as he gets into the others car and tells him where to drive so he could watch Langa's board in action.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Miya serves more as an antagonist than an outright villain for this episode. When Langa's foot-strap breaks, he tells him to get it fixed or at least upgraded because he wants to win fairly, not because his board sucks.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Miya used to have a group of friends who soon turned on him when his skills started to surpass theirs. They even tell him a "hero" couldn't be friends with "slimes". A few kids who were watching during his press photos even attempt to sabotage him when he's performing.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While Miya is arrogant and wanted to beat Langa, the main reason he loses his race was because he stopped to warn Langa not to take the rails for fear he'd fall off.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Reki seems to be looking at the audience when Langa asks what adjustments he plans on making to his board and replies with, "Wait and see!"
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Adam's first appearance has him circling around Langa and hovering his hands over his legs.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Reki somehow manages to get into Shadow's moving car despite not being near him in the scene before.
  • Stepford Smiler: Reki notices that in all of Miya's public photos, despite putting on a cheerful smile, he doesn't actually look like he's happy or having fun.
  • When He Smiles: After beating Miya, Reki takes him in as their friend, with Miya first pretending to be annoyed but soon smiling and laughing along with Reki.
