Title From: Sex Education (2019)

After the shocking murder of Ethel's parents, the teens are distracted by a sex education class, leading to a unique party.

Tropes

  • The Beard: To avoid dealing with her sexual attraction to women, Cheryl forces herself to start dating Archie.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Penelope, suspecting (or realizing) Cheryl is gay, demands Julian set her up with a "suitable match", presumably meaning a red-haired boy, as to have a lesbian in their family would be scandalous. He does, only for Cheryl to tell them she had sex and show them a hickey, which is scandalous in a different way.
  • Call-Back: Veronica calls Jughead, 'Holden Caulfield', which she first referred to him as in Season 1. It serves as the impetus for their all-night talks.
  • Commonality Connection: Ending up alone so Veronica can avoid Julian Blossom's advances, she and Jughead realise they have a shared affinity for literature and film. And more, as they spend the night together, talking.
  • Coquettish Lip Biting: Both Archie and Betty do this in Betty's dream.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance:
    • Police work in the 1950s is rather shoddy: The evidence against Ethel was taken from Jughead’s home while he was gone. Nowadays, this would be considered illegal to do so without a warrant. There’s also no mention of forensics and the house isn’t sealed off to prevent contamination of the crime scene.
    • Jughead living completely alone with no sign of parents isn’t questioned, even after Sheriff Keller shows up there.
    • Principal Featherhead’s plan to address the murders is to not address the issue at all, despite the rumors against Ethel and everyone being shaken up about it.
  • Did They or Didn't They?: All episode long, Cheryl forces herself to date Archie and at Veronica's make-out party they... make out and then Cheryl pulls Archie horizontal. The next day she brazenly announces to her mother and brother that she had sex, which very obviously seems a manoeuvre to kill suspicions about her being a lesbian. However, the episode ends without certainty.
  • Erotic Dream: And then some. After the Dark Room open mic night performances, everyone dreams of hot make-outs in a Garden of Eden type dreamscape:
    • Archie about Cheryl
    • Cheryl about Toni
    • Veronica about Julian and Archie, respectively
    • Kevin about Clay
    • and Betty about Archie
  • Garden of Love: The setting for the dreams.
  • Gone Horribly Right: What Penelope thinks happened with her plan to have Cheryl date a boy. Cheryl claims they have already had sex.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Heterosexual Today?: Cheryl announces to her mother and brother that she and Archie "went all the way" also calling him an animal. This is after she realizes they set her up with him.
  • Kiss Diss: Cheryl and Fangs are randomly paired in Veronica's make-out party game. Cheryl is appalled and turns her head at the last second.
  • Long Game: What Toni reveals to Veronica she is playing, although she chooses not to reveal to Veronica with whom, given the time period (it's Cheryl).
  • Love Dodecahedron: Although it's listless and awkward since Kevin is secretly gay, Midge and Kevin's kiss in Veronica's game officially seals the weird love square between Kevin, Moose, Midge, and Fangs.
    • Moose cheated on Midge with Kevin in Season 1, while Midge cheated on Moose with Fangs in Season 2.
    • After Midge died, Kevin and Moose dated until he left town, after which Kevin and Fangs dated.
    • After Kevin breaks up with Fangs in Season 5, Fangs starts dating Moose briefly.
    • Moose comes back to town in Season 6 where he and Kevin get back together.
    • And now, Fangs and Midge are dating in the '50s.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Canadian Vanessa Morgan very clearly says 'sorrey' in Toni and Veronica's scene at the lockers.
  • Pet the Dog: Alice takes in Ethel after her parents' death and shows sincere concern for her.
  • Rejection Affection: Archie rejects Veronica, telling her he doesn't think they work. This only fuels Veronica to keep pursuing him after he starts seeing Cheryl, going so far as to host a make-out party and rig the kissing game so she's paired with Archie. However, all of this doesn't change anything.
  • Sex Miseducation Class: The "PTA Approved" sex education course uses flowers, pollen and bees as a metaphor for reproduction. And only reproduction. Unsurprisingly, the gang is confused sans Betty, who has been secretly reading Dr. Kinsley’s book on sexual behavior.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Jughead and Veronica.
    • Kevin and Clay, especially after Clay opens up to Kevin about being gay.
  • Shout-Out:
Veronica: Isn't that your thing? "Everybody's phony except me".
  • Tempting Fate: Julian tells his mother Cheryl and Archie are together, and he is fairly certain they are going steady. Right after, Cheryl walks in with a hickey on her neck and claims to have had sex with Archie.
