Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: It appears Pops has died, but he retired.
  • Big Bad: Hiram, again. Even more so than Season 2, as he’s managed to destroy almost all of Riverdale.
  • Character Development: Archie’s time in the Army has made him more levelheaded and emotionally mature than he was in the past season.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Reggie now serves under Hiram as right-hand man.
  • Ghost Town: With everyone who could have stopped Hiram from leaving town, Hiram’s power goes unchecked, and he goes ahead with his plans. By the time Archie returns, the town is a borderline ghost town and ruined.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • During her time at the FBI, Betty encountered a serial killer known as the Trashbag killer.
    • Chad mentions he and Veronica were in a near-fatal helicopter accident.
  • Put on a Bus: The time skip is the excuse for several characters such as F.P. and Penelope to have all left town.
    • Hermione has a brief cameo in New York, now a reality TV star.
  • Shout-Out: Betty's opening training in the woods at the FBI Academy is like the beginning of The Silence of the Lambs.
  • Soiled City on a Hill: What Riverdale has become. The place is so crime-filled that buses don't stop there, and it's called "The Lonely Highway." There is no fire department as Hiram is building a highway to his pricey SoDale suburb division. The Ghoulies have taken over Archie's home, and he openly calls it a "Hellscape", as Hiram's ultimate goal is to kill the town off to build his fortune.
  • Time Skip: Moves the series into the future seven years.
  • Wham Episode: Archie returns from his time in the army to find Riverdale in ruins.
  • Wham Line: Veronica introduces Chad as "her husband."
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: Post-timeskip Veronica states the current year to be 2021, which creates several problems.
    • In season one, FP's mug shot revealed his birthday to be January 20, 1970 (which is also that of his actor, Skeet Ulrich), then in season three (aired in 2019), he announced he was celebrating his fiftieth birthday. This would either retcon the previous seasons as having taken place earlier than they did, or imply FP's mug shot was counterfeit.
    • Early in season one, an episode features a cameo by Mike Posner's song "I Took a Pill in Ibiza." Assuming the episode took place in the present day when it aired in 2017, this would've been fine...but the song was released in 2015, which does not equal seven years when subtracted from 2021.
    • Jughead was also stated to be born in 2001. He would be twenty years old in 2021, but he’s closer to 23-24 here.
    • In Season 3’s Musical Episode, they did Heathers: The Musical. The musical first debuted in LA in 2014 (which would be the year their senior year would be taking place according to the skip, but they did it during their junior year), but the high school version the show uses was not created and approved until 2018.
    • Hal was killed in 2019, which would be during the time skip instead of a significant plot point. Made worse by the fact that his tombstone seen in the fourth season premiere explicitly stated him to have died in 2019 and his birthdate to have been February 12, 1970 note .
    • Perhaps most egregiously, Fred Andrews' tombstone also lists his year of death as 2019 and is shown in detail just a few episodes before the time skip.
    • So, really, by all means, this episode should take place in 2026 to fit within the timeline.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: The way Betty usually behaves when it comes to dealing with serial killers gets her into trouble here with the FBI; not only does she end up in danger, but she is also benched and is stuck doing cold cases as punishment.
