Tropes

  • Break the Cutie: Caboose, as he finally realizes that Church isn't going to come back this time, or ever.
  • Friendly Enemy: While most of the Blues and Reds have shown their true colors already, Loco shows that he really does want to be Caboose's friend, panicking when Temple says how he helped him edit Church's fake message and not showing any of the rudeness his teammates do.
  • Kansas City Shuffle: Grif wandering around and getting caught? While it was a failure of a rescue, it made for a "Pretty fucking sweet diversion", and gave Locus the opening he needed to reach the Freelancers.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After Temple reveals Church's unedited message to everyone, where it is revealed to have happened back at Blood Gulch with him calling Control for help after Tucker and Caboose flushed a grenade down the toilet and blew it up, an event that happened at some point off-screen, Temple asks if any of them remember that incident, saying it "must've been a memorable episode".
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Caboose laments that he never got to do this with Church.
  • Noodle Incident: The true contents of Church's message are him calling Control to get a plumber because Tucker and Caboose flushed a grenade down a toilet.
  • The Reveal: The mysterious message from Church? Just a hoax used by the Blues and Reds to lure out the Reds and Blues. They took a recording of one of Church's communications during Blood Gulch and chopped it up.
  • Toilet Humor: Church's message is revealed to actually be a recording of a time from Blood Gulch when he called Control about Tucker and Caboose blowing up the toilet by flushing a grenade down it. Church in the message sounds absolutely horrified and struggling to breathe, explaining how shit is everywhere and is even coming out of the walls, and begging for them to send a plumber. While the message is comedic, it also has a hint of tragedy to it, since it confirms that Church really is dead for good.
