From Pluto with Love

Intrigued by Pluto's 'heart' of ice, Mindy wants to send it a valentine.
  • Blue Means Cold: During the Imagine Spot, Pluto turns blue when she talks about how cold her temperature is.
  • Casual Interstellar Travel: Lampshaded. Whereas the New Horizons spacecraft took nine years to get to Pluto, the saucer can get the kids to Pluto in nine minutes, as said by Jet.
  • Failures on Ice: Sean has trouble standing on Pluto, which has an icy surface.
  • Heart Symbol: Mindy learns that Pluto has a heart of ice called the Tombaugh Reggio.
  • Imagine Spot: At the start of the episode, Mindy imagines talking to Pluto.
  • Insert Song: The cast sings an ode to Pluto, "Dear Little Frozen Pluto."
  • Instantly Proven Wrong:
Sean: At least the low gravity will keep me from getting hurt.
    (he falls)
    Sean: Ow, that hurt.
  • Ship Tease: Jet dances with Sean during "Dear Little Frozen Pluto," which is a love song towards Pluto. Sean ends up lifting Jet in the air ala Dirty Dancing.
  • Shout-Out: The episode title is a reference to From Russia with Love.
  • Space Is Cold: This gets brought up a lot. Sure enough, when the kids get to Pluto, it is freezing cold. Celery mentions that the gang's spacesuits are designed to handle cold temperatures.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The kids get ready for Valentine's Day by making their own valentines out of paper, and Mindy feels sad that little, frozen Pluto is so far out at the edge of the solar system. So, the older kids go up in space and visit Pluto, while Mindy watches on Jet's smartwatch, and the cast sings "Dear Little Frozen Pluto."

A Star is Born

Sydney directs a Commander Cressida movie about how stars are born.
  • Acting for Two: In-Universe, Jet plays both hydrogen and helium in the kids' movie about the formation of a star.
  • Amateur Film-Making Plot: Sydney and the gang create a Commander Cressida fan-film about the birth of a star. Complete with cardboard props and wooden acting, but still very charming and educational nonetheless.
  • Animal-Eared Headband: Sean wears a headband with dog ears when playing Sirius.
  • Artistic License – Space:
    • Even in a show like this. Jet says that stars are born in the "Frantulon" Nebula. There is no such nebula in real life. The closest would be the Tarantula Nebula.
    • There's also an In-Universe example. The kids learn that stars take millions of years to be born, but Sydney decides to make her star-formation movie a really fast version.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Sunspot shows some crude drawings on his tablet. Those drawings are the storyboards for the episode.
  • Cartoon Juggling: At the start of the episode, Sydney is coming up with ideas for a Commander Cressida story, but keeps throwing them away. Sunspot juggles her crumpled up pieces of paper in the shower variant.
  • Cool Shades: Sunspot wears star-shaped sunglasses after getting cast as the literal star of the movie.
  • Directed by Cast Member: In-Universe — Sydney directs the movie and plays Commander Cressida.
  • Double-Meaning Title: "A Star is Born" both refers to the educational theme of the episode (how stars are born) and the plot of the episode (the kids making a movie).
  • Insert Song: Face, and later the kids, sing a song about how stars are born.
  • Match Cut: A close-up shot of Sydney's Commander Cressida toy cuts to a shot of Sydney dressed as Commander Cressida.
  • Questionable Casting: In-Universe. Sydney casts Team Pet Sunspot as the literal star of the movie, since he has 'sun' in his name and the sun is a star, leaving Sean to play the dog, Sirius. In that way, the actual pet is not playing the movie pet, but a human is. Sean points out how ridiculous this decision was.
  • Shout-Out: Face 9000 says "I'm ready for my closeup!"
  • Understatement: Jet comments that Sunspot really got into his role of playing the star. Sunspot then acts like a movie star. Sean says that's the understatement of the year.
