"How can six kids possibly make so much noise eating dinner?"
Written by Miles Luna & Kerry Shawcross

"You're smarter, you're kinder, you're stronger, and you're not done growing yet. None of us are."
Lie Ren

Yang and Weiss have joined up with Team RNJR, just in time to learn the full truth about the Maidens, the Wizard, and what Ozpin did to the Branwen siblings.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Black Comedy: Yang uses her new arm in a Rocket Punch during her arm-wrestle with Nora. When Nora figures out she's not only pushed into the wall, but holding Yang's arm, she screams in surprise and throws it back, but Yang finds it hilarious as she catches it.
  • Call-Back: After Jaune worries that he ate so much he'll throw up, Yang playfully calls him, "Vomit Boy", the unflattering nickname Ruby bestowed on Jaune in Volume 1. Similarly, Nora mentions Weiss' "Ice Queen" nickname, much to her chagrin.
  • Character Development: The trope itself is discussed at length by Ren and the others, and is in full display. Weiss has finished defrosting and is happily joking with Jaune like old friends, Yang is acting more cautiously, and so on.
Ren: Well, that embarrassment — desire to go back and tell yourself not to be so stupid — that just proves you're not the same person you used to be. You're smarter, or kinder, or stronger, and you're not done growing yet. None of us are.
    Beat
Ruby: Yeah, turns out Ren gets real deep when he feels like talking.
  • The Chew Toy: Yang has already beaten the crap out of Shay D. Mann twice, and the episode ends with him facing Cinder's group and Dr. Watts. As he mentions, he's having a very bad week.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Ozpin openly admits that he's surprised Raven would so easily reveal that she and Qrow can transform into birds. He concludes that Raven must trust Yang very much to have told her this.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Ruby sees Yang's arm wrestling match with Nora and tells her not to lose to somebody wearing a skirt. As Weiss points out, Ruby is wearing a skirt, not that Ruby listens.
  • Late to the Punchline: It's only after Ozpin finishes his explanation and ended the conversation by relinquishing control of Oscar's body back to Oscar that Nora realises there's a connection between Qrow and Raven's names and the types of birds Ozpin decided to transform them into.
  • Oh, Crap!: Yang and Nora's arm-wrestling match ends when Yang releases her cyberarm, leaving Nora to slam into a wall holding nothing but a detached arm. When they realise what Yang just did, the looks on everyone's faces is astonishment and disbelief.
  • Punny Name: Shay D. Mann was originally credited as a 'shady man'. He was introduced as a seedy bar fly who tried to chat up Yang and wouldn't take no for an answer until she punched out of the building. This is before he's revealed to be a bandit.
  • The Reveal: When explaining why Raven and Qrow can turn into birds, Ozpin clarifies that he does possess magical ability; however, it's finite and dwindling. He then admits that he sacrificed most of his magic when he created the original Maidens, confirming him to be the reclusive Old Wizard from the ancient fairy tale, The Story of the Seasons.
  • Super-Empowering: The original Maidens, Qrow and Raven were all ordinary people without magical ability of their own until Ozpin bestowed his magic on them. The greater part of his magic went to the Four Maidens, while he used a miniscule amount to give Raven and Qrow the ability to shapeshift into birds. He confesses that his magical power is finite and dwindling, and that gifting magic to others is not an easy thing to do and is never done lightly.
  • You Can Turn Back: Ozpin informs the group that they all have a choice: they can press forward with him, or they can get out of the fight now. He will not consider it a disgrace or a dishonour if they wish to abstain from the battle. However, he does intimate that 'retreat' is dishonourable.
