"Do you have any idea what your stunt cost us?"
Written by Miles Luna & Kerry Shawcross
Directed by Kerry Shawcross, Gray G. Haddock & Miles Luna

"Your presupposition that you can simply have whatever it is you want is a clear sign of our failure as parents. But from now on, I'll be giving you the full attention you require, starting by keeping you where I can see you."
Jacques Schnee

Tyrian is thrilled to have the chance to fight Qrow, but Ruby can't quite get the hang of the command "stay back". Meanwhile, Weiss faces the consequences of her meltdown at the charity fundraiser while Oscar struggles to cope the situation he and Ozpin find themselves in.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Batman Gambit: Whitley had been supportive of Weiss knowing that encouraging her to stand up for herself against Jacques would likely result in her doing something that would anger him enough to disinherit her.
  • Blade Brake: Qrow does one of these when he's blasted away from a ruined house, first throwing his sword to land blade-first into the ground then jumping onto the handle as it slides to a halt.
  • Blood Knight: If anything, Tyrian seems even more thrilled to fight a competent fighter of his caliber than Team RNJR, given how he still laughs maniacally throughout their duel.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Weiss calls out Jacques, saying she'll leave and be a Huntress no matter what he says. She even puts a stop on his rant about "the Schnee name" by reminding him he married into that name, so it's not his to protect. Unfortunately for Weiss, Jacques disinherits her.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Tyrian stopped attacking after he disarmed Qrow, apparently assuming the latter was no longer a threat without his sword. He looks away for a moment when Ruby tries to snipe him and Qrow pummels his face. Tyrian literally did not see the first punch coming and clearly didn't expect the physical beatdown either.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Even if one argued that Weiss deserved punishment for the incident, losing control of her Semblance that is, not standing up to Jacques, his reaction is overkill.
  • Exact Words: While fighting Tyrian, Qrow orders Team RNJR not to get close after a few members try to do so only to be swatted back by Tyrian. Ruby decides to help her uncle in a different way by positioning herself high up from afar to try and shoot at Tyrian with Crescent Rose. It doesn't work; she narrowly misses him the first time, and he blocks them all with his stinger the second time.
  • From Bad to Worse: For Weiss. Her father has become even more abusive and controlling; she stands up to him, and he slaps her and effectively imprisons her in the manor, and disinherits her in favor of her brother Whitley. The only upside is that she still has her weapon.
  • Fusion Dance: It seems that Ozpin's Aura and soul have fused with Oscar's, and Ozpin implies that it happened to him once as well.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: At one point Qrow is disarmed, so what does he do? Use his fists of course.
  • Gotta Get Your Head Together: Oscar holds his head a few times while trying to deny what's happening.
  • Grin of Audacity: A Freeze-Frame Bonus, but when Qrow briefly activates his sword's scythe mode, he flashes a large grin as the shotgun barrels aim and shot in Tyrian's face.
  • Irony: At the beginning of the Volume, Tyrian mocked Cinder for screwing up and losing her eye at the Battle of Beacon, but here he ends up making the exact same mistake she did; he ignores Ruby to strike the distracted Qrow and Ruby chops off his stinger in return.
  • It's All About Me: Jacques doesn't care that Weiss' actions, unwittingly or not, were a response against his abuses, but about the Schnee family's (primarily his own) reputation.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After Tyrian loses his stinger and sees that Team RNJR is still ready to take him on he chooses to flee rather than fight a losing battle. A bit zigzagged though as he clearly doesn't want to do so, out of fear of Salem's response, but convinces himself that it won't count against him.
  • Legacy Character: Implied by Ozpin, when he says that Oscar's experience of hearing Ozpin's voice happened to Ozpin as well. This is further supported by the fact that apparently their souls have literally merged into one.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Whitley demonstrates he's as much of a conniving jerkass as Jacques.
  • Meaningful Echo: 'What's your favorite fairy tale?' First said by Ozpin to Pyrrha when he had no choice left but to make her the Fall Maiden, now repeated by Qrow to RNJR once it becomes apparent that they, or at the very least Ruby, will not be able to remain bystanders in the coming battles.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Qrow when Tyrian cuts him with his stinger after he's saved Ruby.
    • Tyrian gets another one after Ruby amputates his stinger and he turns to attack only to see Jaune, Nora, and Ren are prepared to re-enter the fight and knows this time, they could take him.
  • Our Souls Are Different: Ozpin's soul and Aura have somehow fused with Oscar's.
  • Poison Is Corrosive: When Tyrian's stinger is hacked off, the purple venom that leaks out briefly corrodes the stone pavement.
  • Precision F-Strike: This episode indicates the show's growing willingness to use stronger language than it has before.
    • Jacques admits to Weiss he doesn't "give a damn" what she thinks.
    • Ruby cuts off the end of Tyrian's tail, and he goes "You bitch!" It's the strongest language used in the series so far.
  • Refusal of the Call: Oscar is trying to deny Ozpin's existence, and as such is not eager to follow his directions.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Averted. Qrow and Tyrian briefly pause their fight to speak to each other, but Tyrian resumes his attack while Qrow is still talking.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Tyrian loses the end of his tail he starts babbling about how she (Salem) will forgive him for failing and generally ranting as he flees.
  • You Are Grounded!: Jacques grounds Weiss for her “misbehavior” at the charity event.
