Season 01, Episode 02:

Cat Burglar

Team RWBY watches a news report of a new cat burglar in town, the girls go swimming, Blake, Yang and Ruby play jump rope, Yang gives Blake a ball of Yarn, and Zwei goes on the hunt.

Cat Burglar

Team RWBY hears a report on the news that there's a cat burglar afoot. All eyes turn to Blake, their Cat Girl teammate, who gets annoyed at their profiling... while stealing everything in sight.

  • Little Bit Beastly: Invoked. Blake becomes annoyed when she realised that her team-mates seem to think she'd be a cat burglar just because she's part cat.
  • Fantastic Racism: Invoked: Blake declares that assuming she'd be a thief just because there's a cat burglar on the loose is racial profiling and that she ought to report them to Professor Goodwitch.
  • Hot Pursuit: When Blake races off with Yang's stolen motorbike, the television anchor reports a live car chase with the cops in pursuit of the potential thief on a yellow motorcycle that is full of stolen goods.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While Blake lectures her team-mates on how disgusting it is that they're profiling her as a cat burglar just because she is part-cat, she is stealing all the stuff in the room they're in. She finishes her lecture by stealing Yang's motorcycle and fleeing.

Ice Skating

Weiss ice skates. Her teammates, who took her out to go swimming and are now frozen into Weiss's ice rink, are annoyed.

  • Harmless Freezing: Although Ruby, Blake and Yang are frozen in the ice while Weiss is skating, they're not being damaged, they're just stuck and annoyed.
  • Mundane Utility: Weiss has the ability to freeze the Grimm to death. Instead, she decides to freeze the swimming pool solid so that she ice-skate for fun. Her team-mates end up half-frozen in the water while she enjoys herself.

Jump Rope

Ruby plays jump rope with Gambol Shroud. Jaune is the butt of jokes.

  • Butt-Monkey: Ruby chants a rhyme as she jumps the rope which mentions that Jaune fell over a candlestick. He then shows up on crutches because of a broken leg and complains about Blake leaving her stuff lying around after she's finished reading.
  • Mundane Utility: Blake uses the ribbon of her weapon to create a skipping rope with Yang so that Ruby can jump the rope.

Yarn

Yang gives Blake a ball of yarn as a gift. Blake complains about being expected to play with it because she's a Cat Girl, but Ruby has no such compunctions and plays like a stereotypical kitten.

Blake vs. Zwei

Zwei searches Team RWBY's room, but he doesn't find Blake, who is hidden behind a lamp.

  • Behind a Stick: Zwei sniffs around the dorm room, stares at the camera and the audience and then growls at the lampstand. He then runs out of the room when called by Yang. After he's gone, Blake creeps out from behind the lampstand, having been completely hidden from the audience despite how thin the pole is.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Zwei enters the girls' dorm room, sniffing around the floor. He suddenly stops near the camera, sits down and stares at the audience for a moment, before continuing on his way.
