Recap / Power Rangers Ninja Steel S 01 E 16 Monkey Business

Go To

A morning annoyance between Hayley and Calvin gets exaggerated due to a little pride and competition, made only worse because of Phonepanzee: a monster who can use the rangers's voices against them.

  • An Aesop: "Y'know, just because you heard something doesn't mean that it's true."
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Hayley snarking about Calvin being too laidback to get anything done is what convinces him to give her a run for her money.
  • Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat: Victor could win the election if he tried, but he and Monty are too focused on sabotaging Calvin and Hayley's campaign to win.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Mick ends up accidentally ruining Phonephanzee's plan just by passing through the school. He approached Hayley and Preston as they were about to leave for the ambush site and held them up long enough for them to bump into Levi just before he got a call from "Hayley."
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Hayley uses the Earth Element Star to try and trap Phonephanzee into a pitfall, but it doesn’t work, so she uses it to go underground and strike with a sneak attack.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: As the current school council president, Victor will keep the position if both Hayley and Calvin are disqualified. He tries to make it seem like each candidate is sabotaging the other. It doesn't work but the two candidates leave the run and he gets to keep his presidency.
  • Failed a Spot Check: This is the reason for Phonephanzee’s deception being revealed to the rangers. While calling the rangers one-by-one was working, he never bothered to check to see which rangers were around and which weren’t so he’d know who to call and whose voice he should mimic. Once Hayley, Levi, and Preston figure it out, Phonephanzee’s plan falls apart.
  • Food Fight: As it's tradition (see below).
  • Heads or Tails?: The other Rangers split into pairs and did this to decide which campaign to join: Brody and Sarah on Calvin's, and Preston and Levi on Hayley's.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Victor gets a face full of food during the food fight. He later gets drenched by the water balloons he and Monty rigged up.
  • Make My Monster Grow: Not the full quote, but Cosmo says “Make my monkey grow!” when he gigantifies Phonepanzee.
  • Only Sane Man: While the others are quick to fall for Phonephanzee's lies about who started the food fight, Mick and later Levi point out how none of this is in line with what they know about each other.
  • Recycled Script: The episode actually combines two different plots from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The premise of Hayley and Calvin being a couple that are competing against each other for student body president, only to put the two at odds through an outside force (The main difference is that this time they aren’t put under a spell) is similar to season 2's "Best Man for the Job". Meanwhile, a homage to season 1's "Food Fight" occurs when Victor and Monty rig Calvin's cupcakes with hot sauce, escalating a food fight that only causes tension with the rangers.
  • Shout-Out: Levi calls Phonepanzee a dirty ape.
  • Voice Changeling: Phonepanzee can imitate anyone's voice so long as he is nearby to record them talking.
  • We Need a Distraction: Hayley and Levi morph to keep Phonephanzee distracted while Preston uses ninja tactics to sneak too where the other rangers are at and saves them while dispatching the Basher Bots before they could notice.
  • With Catlike Tread: After acquiring the voice samples, Phonepanzee boasts he will make a stealthy exit. He immediately bumps into a nearby bike, tipping off the Rangers to his presence.
