Recap / Power Rangers In Space S1E29 Dark Specter's Revenge Part 1

Go To

Following on from the last episode, Dark Specter is furious about Astronema's Heel–Face Turn, as she is now Karone. With that, Dark Specter vows that the rangers will pay...

On the Astro Megaship, Andros gives Karone, still in her villain outfit, a tour of the ship. Unfortunately, while she has rejected her evil ways, she's still wary about her standing with the other rangers and whether they will accept her. As if by coincidence, D.E.C.A. calls Karone to the bridge, where the rangers have come to a very important decision. They have decided that she is to be—...

...—come an honorary Power Ranger, complete with uniform and communicator. The rangers now trust her implicitly. Later, Karone steps out of the deck elevator, lacking her armor-and-latex outfit, makeup, and colorful hair, now looking less hostile with a nice softer blonde bob cut and the purple uniform the rangers gave her.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Bulk, Skull, and Prof. Phenomenus are doing some night sky watching. Phenomenus happens to spot an asteroid in space, of which Bulk and Skull are elated for him. Phenomenus would be too, except this of a similar build like the one that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, and is headed straight for Earth...

Back on the Megaship, gravity vibrations shake the ship, and D.E.C.A. sounds red alert, warning about the oncoming asteroid. Andros lurches the controls, and barely misses the asteroid as it hurtles by. The rangers then receive a communication from Dark Specter, who directed the asteroid in their direction, demanding Karone's return. Ashley mocks him, saying that he missed. Unfortunately, the Megaship was not what Dark Specter aimed for. The rangers scramble to destroy the asteroid with the ship's Megalaser armament, but it doesn't even make a dent.

With another idea, the rangers teleport down to the surface to set up detonators to blow it to pieces. Just as they're about to set the final charges, Quantrons arrive in Velocifighters to stop them, and Darkonda arrives, as well, with a battalion of Quantrons. Carlos, Cassie, and Ashley, in their Mega-V Vehicles, are able to destroy the Fighters, and T.J. plants the last charge, with Andros and him calling for their Mega Vehicles as well. As the charges go off, T.J. and Andros make a hasty exit. The surface of the asteroid erupts in explosions, and Andros celebrates, but too soon, as the asteroid, again, is no smaller than it was before!

Back on the ship, Karone has one desperate idea: she will re-board the Dark Fortress and try to reprogram the asteroid's trajectory. Andros tries to plead with her, but their options seem to be running out, so they agree to send her.

On Earth, Phenomenus, Bulk, and Skull are desperately trying to get into NASADA, to warn of the impending doom approaching. General Norquist is not yet convinced, but decides to listen to the trio anyways..

Meanwhile, Karone has made her way back to the Dark Fortress, back in her armor-and-latex costume. The main bridge seems to be eerily empty, until Ecliptor comes in. Karone thinks everything is normal, until Ecliptor turns, revealing robotic implants attached to his face and chest. All sense of honor and virtue has been suppressed, and Ecliptor advances on Karone, promising to do the same to her that Darkonda did to him. In the struggle, Karone loses her communicator earpiece, and back on the Megaship, Alpha 6 solemnly declares that her signal has been lost.

By this time, General Norquist now believes Phenomenus and contacts the rangers, notifying them of the dwindling time window to save Earth. T.J., as a last ditch effort, strongly suggests the Megazords.

Norquist holds a press conference, notifying the general public of the impending disaster. When interviewed by a local news crew, Phenomenus, with no other options to save Earth, suggests that the only thing left to do now is... panic.

Meanwhile, the Megaship transforms into the Megazord, but isn't the only one the rangers call. The Delta Megaship transforms and arrives as well, but they still aren't done. With their Mega Vehicles, they form the Mega Voyager, and all three begin to push on the asteroid.

On Earth, Phenomenus, Bulk, and Skull notice an unattended rocket sitting on its launchpad. Hopeful that they can escape the calamity to a new planet, the three board it and immediately lift-off.

Finally, in space, Andros tries to push all the power they have through the Megazords, but they're giving it all they got, it's not enough, and the asteroid has begun streaking through Earth's atmosphere...

To Be Continued...

Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Response:
Ashley: And in case you hadn't noticed, your asteroid? It missed us.
Dark Specter: Of course. It's heading for Earth!
  • Bad Vibrations: The Megaship is shaken by the gravity of the asteroid seconds before it is about to collide with them. The rangers are barely able to move the ship out of the way.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Darkonda does this to Ecliptor, who in turn drags Karone in for the procedure.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Phenomenus is the first scientist on Earth to detect the asteroid. He even noticed it before the Rangers did. He desperately tries to warn the folks at NASADA what's coming in panicked fashion, and he is soon proven right.
  • Darkest Hour: The people of Earth are in a state of complete panic over the asteroid's approach, and all of the Rangers' attempts to stop it fail.
  • Dramatic Irony: General Norquist sends a distress call to the Megaship, saying only the Rangers can stop the asteroid. By the time this happens, though, viewers have already seen a few failed attempts by the Rangers to stop it.
  • Evil Laugh: Darkonda over the asteroid being about to enter Earth's atmosphere.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: Ashley thinks, at first, that the asteroid was meant for the Astro Megaship. It wasn't.
  • Forgot About Her Powers: Karone for some reason didn't use her teleportation ability to escape from the brainwashed Ecliptor.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Justified. The Rangers try more mundane options to take out the asteroid: using the Megaship's blasters, planting explosives, Karone sneaking aboard the Dark Fortress. None of these plans work, so they have no choice but to summon every Megazord they've got to try to push the asteroid off course.
  • Good Costume Switch: After The Rangers surprise Karone by making her an honorary Power Ranger, she wears a purple Megaship Uniform which they made for her, drops her Astronema makeup and blue wig, revealing her natural short blonde hair, only remaining her locket.
  • Heroic BSoD: Andros completely shuts down, after Karone is recaptured. T.J. has to rouse him to snap out of it and focus on the asteroid.
  • Hope Spot: The detonators cause a massive explosion, but it doesn't even scratch the asteroid.
  • I Lied: No one trusts Dark Specter to spare Earth if he gets what he wants. Sure enough, even after Karone is recaptured, the asteroid's course remains uninterrupted.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Panic erupts at the press conference, after General Norquist explains how severe the situation is.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After Karone's communicator cuts out, Andros has this reaction over letting her go back to the Dark Fortress.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally bombastic Phenomenus is quite somber and reserved when telling a reporter that all people can do in response to the asteroid is panic.
  • Properly Paranoid: After the Megaship narrowly misses getting hit by the asteroid that came out of nowhere, T.J. notes there's no way this was an accident.
  • Sadistic Choice: Dark Specter demands the Rangers return Karone or Earth will be destroyed by an asteroid.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Bulk and Skull when Phenomenus fully explains to them how dire the situation is.
  • To Be Continued: Three Megazords try to push the asteroid, but the Rangers find they don't have enough power.
  • Wham Episode: This two-parter is one of the many episodes in the season that pushed the envelope in terms of dramatic tension for a children's show, and how dark and terrifying the series really could get.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: Phenomenus desperately tries to get to General Norquist, blocking off the street and screaming about the asteroid. The guards consider him a lunatic and restrain him (plus Bulk and Skull), but General Norquist is troubled enough by the claim to hear him out and look into it.
