Recap / Power Rangers Dino Charge S1E9 When Logic Fails

Go To

Fury's quest for the Gold power continues. After Sledge confiscates the Ptera Charger from him, Fury steals it back and forces Wrench and the maze monster, Puzzler, to help him give it enough power to activate the Ptera Zord, using energy from his own body.

While it's charging, Puzzler stalls the Rangers by trapping them in an endless looping maze, until Riley's logical mind works out an escape plan and helps them break free. However, the delay has allowed Fury to finish fuelling the Ptera Charger and take control of the Ptera Zord.

Tropes used in this episode:

  • Air Vent Escape: How Riley and the others escape Puzzler's maze. Possibly justified, since Puzzler's Reality Warping may have had the side-effect of making the air-vents larger. Or because Puzzler was so busy warping rooms, covering doors with walls and altering maps that he forgot about the vents.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Fury gains control over the Ptera Zord, and is one step closer to obtaining the Gold Energem. However, the Charger is currently drawing its energy from the spirit inside him, which is not too happy about the whole thing...
  • Brick Joke: Koda's stomach causes him more trouble than it's worth.
  • Call-Back: Riley comments on how all the villains are on different paths but they're leading to the same destination. This is the same lesson that Keeper taught about him and Chase in "The Tooth Hurts".
  • Chekhov's Marble: Riley's explanation of the singular outcome for Team Sledge's goals is vital to the rangers escape from the maze.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Riley can either get the Ptera Charger or save the Rangers. Naturally he saves the Rangers.
  • Internal Reveal: Riley sees Fury struggling with the being trapped inside him, just as Tyler did just last episode.
  • Living Battery: Fury becomes one for the Ptera Charger by using the gold energy ghost to recharge the Charger. This does come with its downsides, but Fury breaks out of the charging area before it reaches the tipping point.
  • The Smart Guy: The episode cements Riley as this.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Riley challenges Puzzler to a chess game, uses it as a cover to signal the Rangers (which involves calculating the route through the ventilation system to each Ranger on the fly)...and still wins the game.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Koda, starving hungry even before the Rangers head out, winds up near a still-working vending machine with food in it. He spends most of the episode trying to recover a coin stuck underneath it, until Riley shows everyone how to escape. And of course, the boxes Koda uses to escape the room he's trapped in just happen to have food in them.
