  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Though Brawly's Pokémon put up one heck of a fight (mostly Hariyama) and Hariyama does beat Corphish, in the end, Brawly is beaten fairly easily to show off how well Ash has been doing with his training since the first match.
  • David vs. Goliath: Ash's 5kg Treecko vs. Brawly's 253.8kg Hariyama. Unlike the last time they fought, they're now on more even terms thanks to Treecko utilizing its agility.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Ash manages to cripple Hariyama's Vital Throw by having Treecko constantly use quick Pound attacks against its legs, leaving them raw and sore.
  • Hourglass Plot: At the beginning of the battle, Ash's friends note that Ash and Brawly have swapped strategies they used in their first gym battle. Brock wonders why Brawly would fall for it though. Turns out, it was just part of Brawly's plan.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: A non-sword variant ends the match, as Treecko and Hariyama strike each other midair before Hariyama collapses.
  • The Worf Effect: Brawly's Machop (who easily beat Taillow in the previous match and was a match for Treecko) is outmaneuvered by Treecko and beaten by Corphish to show the results of Ash's training.
