Ash returns to Dewford Town for his rematch with Brawley but runs into Shauna first, Brawley's hot-headed apprentice who claims to be his girlfriend. Brawley appears and disproves this, though Shauna is hopelessly infatuated with him. She challenges Ash to a battle with her Meditite and he gladly accepts, but Brawley calls off the match when he realizes there's a storm approaching. They make their way to a cave for shelter, gathering up scared Pokémon along the way to take shelter with them, and Team Rocket ends up caught in the storm and crash-landing in front of the cave as well, taking shelter with our heroes. The next day they try to steal Pokémon, but are sent blasting off. Ash and Shauna pick up their battle and Pikachu wins. Next up will be Ash vs. Brawley.

- Backstab Backfire: Team Rocket betrays Ash and the gang the second the storm ends, despite them being kind enough to provide the criminals shelter. In classic Team Rocket fashion, it backfires spectacularly.
- Expy: As her attire, hairstyle, and choice in Pokémon go, Shauna is an obvious stand-in from the then-new Battle Girl trainer class.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Shauna is very jealous of Ash, who Brawly considers to be a better trainer than her. This is what leads to her trying to beat him in a Pokémon battle.
- Growling Gut: Right before Ash and Shauna's Pokémon battle, Shauna's belly starts rumbling. When she asks to take a break and eat, Ash stubbornly refuses and complains... only for his stomach to growl too.
- Precocious Crush: Shauna has a massive crush on Brawly.
