Binging on too many burgers during lunch has given Ash a case of indigestion that stops him in his tracks. Unable to help their friend, Misty and Brock contemplate what to do until a miniature, seemingly magical, man shows up. He gives Ash two tablets and almost instantaneously cures Ash's aches! Curious about the cure, the gang head back to the small man's lab for a lesson in Pokémon medicine. Here they find out how this helpful fellow creates all kinds of useful potions with the aid of Shuckle and a speedy Pokémon named Spoopy!

Tropes in this episode:

  • Big Eater: Ash ate five hamburgers before the episode. Unsurprisingly, this causes him to experience some serious indigestion.
  • Holy Backlight: Old Man Shuckle has one, but he's holding a flashlight behind his back.
  • Ho Yay: The purple shuckle juice makes Meowth fall in love with James.
Meowth: I'm saving all my love for Jimmy-Wimmie!
  • I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: When Spoopy is throwing Shuckle into the air, Ash, Misty, and Brock are left dashing around trying to catch them, with Brock crying "Hey, I'm a breeder, not an outfielder!".
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: When Old Man Shuckle first appears, Brock mistakes him for "one of those evil and disgusting little trolls".
Old Man Shuckle: Who are you calling 'evil and disgusting'?!
  • Love Potion: Drinking the purple Shuckle juice causes Pokémon to fall in love with the drinker.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Old Man Shuckle is tiny. Brock and Misty think he's a troll initially.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Ash has a stomachache, Misty comments that he brought it on himself by eating four hamburgers. Ash counters that she's wrong - he had five burgers.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jessie when she realize that the Shuckle juice has worn off on Pikachu.
  • Wingding Eyes: The lovey-dovey Pokémon have hearts for eyes.
