. - Shout-Out: Team Rocket does an Antiques Roadshow impersonation to get Arielle's heirloom whistle.
- Take That!: When James gets his head stuck in his Victreebell, he makes some garbled sounds. This is a backwards recording of him saying "Leo Burnett and 4Kids are the devil!"note . Leo Burnett was the advertising agency with the Pokémon account, and 4Kids was the company producing the US dub. The voice actor, Eric Stuart, wasn't happy with how he was being treated. This has been edited out of some later versions of this episode.
