In Malie City, Ash and Kiawe take up the challenge of the Kantonian Gym and its Gym Leader Ryuki.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Ash pointing out how none of the gyms look like the "Kantonian Gym" is a reference to how in USUM, the "Kantonian Gym" is based off what the people of Alola think Kanto gyms must be like such as a Dancer named "Jim Gyde"...who is a regular trainer.
- Shout-Out: The Gym's obstacles are a nod to the Ninja Warrior franchise.
- Take That!: Towards concepts like a theme park version of countries. The creators of the Kanto gym made a gym they considered authentic to Kanto, making it look like Feudal Japan. Ash notes that none of the gyms look like it, which are more modern day buildings. It also references how the Kantonian Gym in the games is a recreation of the Vermillion Gym and gets basically everything wrong on the inside.
