Recap / Pokemon EC 46 The Ties That Bind

Go To

After winning the Equestria League, Flash and his team head out into the woods to train for the next few days to prepare for their championship battle against Shining Armor. While there, Flash reflects on how far he and his Pokémon have all come since he first met them and what they have overcome together.

  • Breather Episode: This chapter takes place between Flash's battles with Lightning Blitz in the Leagues finals and Shining Armor for the championship, with Flash reminiscing on how much he and his team have been through and how they have all grown together.
  • Blatant Lies: When Flash cracks a joke at Twilight's expense when messaging everyone via her journal, Twilight remarks that is the last time she worries about him. Sunset immediately calls her out on it, remarking that it won't be, causing everyone to laugh again.
  • Bookends: When Flash and his team start heading back to Canterlot, they find themselves on the same path Flash and Springer took when they first headed to Canterlot at the start of the series. They also find the same lake where they first met Pegasoar, with Pegasoar being there once again, only his form no longer obscured by the mist like the first time.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: According to Twilight, the guy who won the Equestria League last year was so busy with interview after interview he wasn't able to spend a moment training, resulting in Shining Armor crushing him during their championship battle.
  • Henpecked Husband: When Flash is saying goodbye to Hopper, he tells him he better get going before Princess has both of their hides. This is clearly meant to be a joke though, since Hopper and Princess are very much Happily Married.
  • It Began with a Twist of Fate: When Flash and his team meet Pegasoar again, in the same spot he first revealed himself to Flash at the start of the series, Flash acknowledges how his whole journey was all because of Pegasoar showing himself to Flash that day, since if he hadn't of met Pegasoar he would have gotten to Celestia's lab sooner, signed up for the League and left right away without ever meeting Lightning and starting his rivalry with him, and he wouldn't have stayed in Canterlot overnight, helped saved Champagoon, or end up trusted by Celestia to have Twilight and Spike join him on his journey.
  • Luminescent Blush: Hopper lets out a small blush when Ryu says it is important for Hopper to return to the Dragon Kingdom since on top of them needing their king back, Princess is starting to miss him by now.
  • Red Baron: Flash tells Prongs that it doesn't feel right to call him the "prince of the forest" anymore, and that he's "king of the forest" now.
  • Smoke Out: Pinkie uses a bazooka-like weapon to create a cloud of smoke and confetti to help cover Flash so he can escape the reporters hounding him for interviews.
  • Worthy Opponent: Shining Armor acknowledges Flash as one. He knows that regardless of how strong he is, his battle with Flash is going to be a tough one, and although he doesn't want Flash to beat him, he knows he can't be champion forever and believes that Flash is a good trainer to be his successor as champion, certainly better than Lightning would have been.
