Recap / Pinky And The Brain S 2 E 6

Go To

A group of misguided animal rights activists grabs Brain and Pinky from the lab and drops them off in the jungle. Unused to the environment, Brain shuts down and Pinky has to take charge. To make matters worse, Brain's old nemesis Snowball makes an unwanted reappearance.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Animal Wrongs Group: A group of them "liberates" the duo and returns them to their "natural habitat": the jungle. By throwing them out of a plane, because mice can fly.
  • Big "NO!": Brain lets out one when the Animal Wrongs Group smashes the machine he was going to use to make hypnotic candles.
  • Breaking the Bonds: The mice are tied up by Brain's archnemesis Snowball, who intends to burn them at the stake. Brain tells Pinky, who has been displaying a surprising prowess at surviving in the wilderness, to rip his way free of the ropes, but Pinky is too weak to do it. But when Snowball kicks Pinky off the platform and into quicksand, Brain suddenly goes into an Unstoppable Rage and rips the ropes off himself.
  • Fake-Out Opening: The episode opens on a crudely made live-action film explaining Brain's plan to Pinky (who at one point makes shadow puppets).
  • Shout-Out: The episode’s title is a reference to the Guns N' Roses song of the same name.
    • The logo at the end of Brain’s short film is a parody of the logo for the Mark VII Limited TV production company.
    • One of the activists calls Brain "Bright Eyes", the name given to Charlton Heston’s character by chimp scientist Zira in Planet of the Apes (1968).
    • Pinky references Davy Crockett, book and film critic Gene Shalit and Air Wick air freshener. He also tries to calm Brain down by quoting "Hakuna Matata", and turns his "Narf!" catchphrase into an approximation of the distinctive Tarzan yell.
    • The "Simian Liberation Army" is taken from "Symbionese Liberation Army", the American terrorist group notorious for kidnapping and brainwashing Patty Hearst.
    • A delirious Brain mentions Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
    • The scene where Brain pulls the boat free of an obstruction and emerges with a leech attached to his head pays homage to The African Queen.
    • And then there's the scene where Pinky saves himself and Brain from villagers who have taken them captive, with a shout-out to a tagline for Denny's Grand Slam breakfast.
Brain: Quickly, Pinky! They can smell our fear.
Pinky: [sniffing] That's not fear. That's a $1.99, all-you-can-eat, Vegas-style buffet coming from a resort up the beach.
[The villagers cheer, let the mice go, and run up the beach.]
Brain: Good work, Pinky. But... $1.99? Are they out of their minds?
  • Stylistic Suck: The movie Brain made of his latest plan was clearly made on the cheap, with crudely made puppets.
  • Take My Hand!: Brain offers his hand to Snowball when the latter falls into a river. Snowball refuses, claiming he doesn't need assistance from Brain.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Just as Brain has finally figured out jungle survival and accepted his new environment, some scientists grab him and Pinky and take them back to the lab.
