Recap / Phineas and Ferb: "The Secret of Success"

Go To

While the boys make an ATV that literally goes over any terrain, Candace attends a seminar where she gets a strategy to help her bust her brothers. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz hosts his own telethon in order to raise extra money for his evil schemes.

Tropes:

  • Brits Love Tea: During the montage of Phineas, Ferb and the gang taking their ATV for a drive, one scene shows them having tea with the Queen.
  • Call-Back: When Candace tries to take control of the ATV, she accidentally turns on the radio, which plays "I'm Lindana and I Wanna Have Fun".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: "We preempt this current preemption to bring you another preemption."
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The letters "O-W-C-A" are seen on the test pattern card before the name of the organization is officially revealed in "Summer Belongs to You!".
  • Fun with Acronyms: The known steps to achieving success according to the seminar are BLARF (Be Living, Always Really Focused) and NARG (Never Abandon Realizing your Goal); Candace points out that it should be "NARYG". The third is FREEPO, which is unknown- Candace cannot resist her urges and leaves before we learn what it means.
  • Giant Novelty Check: Doofenshmirtz's telethon receives just one donation, in the form of a giant novelty check for a mere $23.
Doofenshmirtz: (crashed into the tally board) And the final tally is... unbearable pain. And probably a herniated disc.
  • Go to Your Room!: Linda says this word-per-word when she punishes Candace assuming she drove a car with no adult supervision.
  • Hi, Mom!: Doofenshmirtz says this after he finds out that he's on the chopper cam.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: After noticing the boys' ATV outside of the building Candace's seminar is being held at, Candace proclaims that instead of driving the vehicle home and try to show it to her mom, this time she's going to stick around through the rest of the seminar so that she finds the secrets to successfully bust her brothers. Immediately after Stacy praises her for the decision, Candace is already outside climbing into the boys' ATV, asking Stacy to take notes for her.
  • Irony: In spite of taking the evidence home to bust her brothers, Candace herself gets busted instead.
  • List Song: The song lists off all the terrains the ATV can drive over.
  • Loophole Abuse: Phineas and Ferb are too young to drive a car; they get around it by using a remote control.
  • Opening Shout-Out: The ATV is capable of surfing tidal waves. It can also cross the tundra; "crossing the tundra" is one of the lyrics in the extended theme song.
  • Poe's Law: Lawrence mistakes Doofenshmirtz's telethon for a work of satire.
  • Shoot the Dog: Doof threatens Perry's life by saying if no one calls in the next five minutes, "the platypus gets it".
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: Downplayed. Doofenshmirtz opens his telethon by saying that it's broadcast live, "because it's 'evil' spelled backwards!"
  • Stylistic Suck: Doof's songs are usually quite elaborate with full orchestrations and chorus girls. His song for the telethon is just him and a piano because he's strapped for cash.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Candace is not allowed to drive a car alone; in the US, new drivers must have adult supervision until they complete one full year as an officially licensed driver. Justified in that Candace still has her learner's permit.
  • Telethon: Doofenshmirtz hosts one so that he can raise money for his evil schemes.
I want your money, I'm strapped for cash
I need your money, too lazy to get a job
Give me your money, I'm not being funny
    Give me your money today!
  • Three... Two... One...: Ferb does a variation on this when Phineas gets the Big Idea.
    Ferb: Two, three, four...
Phineas: Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!
    Ferb: Five, six, seven...
    Phineas: Hey, where's Perry?
  • The Unreveal: We never learn what FREEPO stands for.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: When Candace wakes up Stacy after she sleeps through the first half of the presentation, Stacy says "It's not my ferret!".
  • We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: When Doofenshmirtz says, "Nothing cuts into my television face time!", his scene is suddenly cut off by a fake test card with Perry's face on it. Doofenshmirtz is not amused.
  • We Don't Need Roads: After being disappointed by an ATV ad that showcases it can only drive through road and mud, the boys made an all-terrain vehicle that can transform as needed to go through all terrains; cliffs, snow, ice, underwater with propellers, through the sky using wing attachments, etc. And yes, it can also drive through road and mud. As the song puts it:
    It's not a submarine, it's not a plane, it's not a train
Come on, let's take a ride; we're talking all terrain
  • We Interrupt This Program: Doofenshmirtz uses a device called the Preemptinator to preempt all television channels and broadcast his telethon, since no TV station wanted to host his show. The telethon then gets preempted by a news van that is following the ATV.
  • You Are Grounded!: When Candace tries to show Linda the ATV, she mentions she was driving it which makes Linda assume she drove a car without any adult supervision, resulting in her being punished.
