Recap / Phineas and Ferb "Tales from the Resistance"

Go To

The story takes place in the 2nd Dimension, two months following the events of the TV film. The Resistance is celebrating the liberation of their Tri-State Area following Doof-2's arrest and the Norm-Bots' destruction. However, they now have to face a new threat, who is none other that Doof-2's wife Charlene-2, who sets her armies of animal cyborgs against the Resistance in an attempt to free her husband so that they can finish off the Resistance.

Since this episode is a direct sequel to Across the 2nd Dimension, this page assumes you have seen the film, and so spoilers are unmarked.

Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: The members of the Resistance and everyone in the final showdown are all kids and animal cyborgs. The only adult taking action in the showdown is Charlene-2 while Doof-2 was briefly hiding behind her chair, much to her annoyance.
  • Amicable Exes: Subverted with Charlene-2 and Heinz-2... because they were never divorced at all. It was a ruse they planned to ensure their finances as well as Charlene-2 and Vanessa-2's safety in case Heinz-2 was overthrown.
  • Badass in Distress: Platyborg, as he was briefly captured by Charlene-2's animal cyborgs.
  • Big Bad: Charlene-2, as she formulated a plan to free her husband from prison and help him take down the Resistance.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Charlene-2 and Vanessa-2.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Nearly all the OWCA agents are freed from control, and with them fighting evil it gives Candace-2 a chance to step down as leader of the Resistance and spend more time with her family and loved ones; however, the Doofenshmirtz family is still at large.
  • Blatant Lies: Candace-2, who still has PTSD from her time under Doof-2's dictatorship is standing sentry while the gang plays "a game of sports". Isabella-2 asks if that is what she is doing, but Candace-2 not very convincingly says she's about to frolic down a hillside.
  • Brain Freeze: Candace-2, unfamiliar with the concept of ice cream, eats hers way too fast and ends up getting an ice cream headache.
  • Calvinball: Since no one in the second dimension has played sports before Doof-2's reign, they essentially make up a game utilizing every piece of sports equipment.
Female Narrator: Once the gong is rung, the offensive team serves the pom-pom and advances down the field. The defending cyclists race past the tackling dummies and try to get into scoring position. If they manage to return the pom-pom into one of the scoring locations, they will be awarded a chance to chase the jumbo riding ball past the midfield skiing defender, while the other team tries to hit as many tennis balls as they can using golf clubs. I don't know why [Irving-2] has a canoe paddle.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Vanessa-2, as she briefly made a cameo in the TV film (though her appearance was cut from the final cut) and contributed little to the plot of the story...... that is until she saved her parents from arrest.
  • Companion Cube: Choo-Choo is this to Doof-2. So much so that after Charlene throws it out the window, he becomes evil again.
  • Creature of Habit: Candace-2, still adjusting to the fact that she is no longer at war, writes in her diary, "War Journal Entry Number... Um, I mean, Dear Diary..."
  • Cyborg: 25 of OWCA's agents have fallen victim to this due to the Doofenshmirtz family.
  • Dark Action Girl: Charlene-2, as she happens to be more experienced in bo staff combat than Candace-2.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Vanessa-2, as in spite of her lack of interest of doing evil like her parents, she formulated a brilliant escape plan for her family in case they would have to face arrest for their crimes.
  • The Dragon: Peter the Pandaborg is the most prominent of the cyborgs and the only one to remain evil at the end of the episode, as he is last seen escaping with the Doofenshmirtz family.
  • Egopolis: Charlene-2's penthouse is named after her, similar to how everything in their Tri-State Area is named after Doof-2.
    Charlene's No-Longer-Married to Doofenshmirtz Penthouse
  • Elseworld: This episode is set entirely in the Second Dimension (which was introduced in The Movie). The events have no impact on the main continuity.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Similar to Doof-2, Charlene-2 can be very intelligent and threatening, even planning to turn Phineas-2, Ferb-2, and Candace-2 into cyborgs after tricking them into freeing her husband. Special points also go to Vanessa-2, who managed to trick Candace-2 into letting her talk with her parents, which contributed to the Doof family's escape.
  • Future Imperfect: Two months after the end of Doof-2's rule over the Tri-State Area, the kids find a stash of sporting goods and, not knowing how they used to be played with in the past, come up with a new game that uses all of them.
  • I'm Back: Doof-2 has this reaction after an annoyed Charlene-2 throws away Doof-1's Choo-Choo.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Doof-2 reveals to Candace-2 there is another Doofenshmirtz, Candace immediately assumes he is referring to Vanessa-2, but Doof-2 says his daughter shows total apathy toward evil, and he was referring to his ex-wife, Charlene-2.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: The bo staff fight between Candace-2 and Charlene-2.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Charlene-2 insists they have another song explaining the convoluted reasons behind the ruse, but Candace-2 says they're good.
  • Mythology Gag: The appearance of Vanessa-2 and her mentioning of her father banishing Tony Marzulo is a holdover from one of the deleted scenes in the original film.
  • Previously on…: A recap of the events of the film is shown narrated by Charlene-2.
  • Reforged into a Minion: The animal cyborgs to the Doofenshmirtz family.
  • Retired Badass: At the end, Candace-2 resigns and decides to leave the pursuit of the Doofenshmirtz family up to the rescued O.W.C.A. agents, though she does also say that she'll still be ready to help them out if they ever need her.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The chips that deprogram the cyborg Agents are sewn into Fedoras identical to the ones that OWCA Agents wear, creating a visual representation of the Agents returning to their true loyalties.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: In the movie, Doof-1 sacrificed his own Choo-Choo toy to stop Doof-2. His act of kindness is undone in this episode when Charlene gets rid of Choo-Choo to make Doof-2 evil again.
  • Sequel Hook: The episode ends with the Doofenshmirtz family reunited and on the run and Candace-2 quitting the agency.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Candace-2 has not adjusted to the end of Doof-2's reign of terror and does not know the first thing about having fun and even lost touch with Jeremy-2.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The prologue is a parody of that of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, complete with the people whispering in Elvish. (Well, one in Elvish, the other attempting to speak Elvish but can only say "Sepulveda", which is a California reference.)
    • Doof-2 being strapped to a dolly and wearing a muzzle is much like Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. At one point, he even says, "Fava beans" menacingly like the character.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Doof-2 and Charlene-2.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Unlike their first dimension counterparts, Doof-2 and Charlene-2 are still married and both evil.
  • Unwilling Roboticisation: Charlene-2 did this to 25 of the animal agents, similar to how Doof-2 did it to Perry-2.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The Doofenshmirtz family manages to escape along with their remaining animal cyborg Pandaborg, on a hovercar driven by Vanessa-2's boyfriend Tony Marzulo.
  • Villain Song: Doof-2 and Charlene-2 do this with "All the Convoluted Reasons We Pretend to be Divorced" to explains their fake divorce to the Resistance.
  • The Voiceless: A second dimension version of Irving appears but has no lines, only vocal effects.
  • We Can Rule Together: Well, not so much ruling together as becoming the leader of her army, but Charlene-2 offers this to Candace-2 when she has her cornered. Unfortunately for Charlene-2, her army (save Peter the Pandaborg) has been brought back to normal at this point and are quick to turn the tables on her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Charlene-2, as she once fired a bazooka at the Resistance when they arrived to her penthouse. Same can be said for the animal cyborgs when they tried to attack the Resistance while kidnapping Platyborg.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: Monogram-2 and Carl-2 say they lost 26 agents, based on the 26 letters of the alphabet. But it never occurred to them, that there may be agents that have the same letter.
