Recap / Phineas And Ferb Perry Lays An Egg

Go To

A bird's egg rolls down the tree and settles behind Perry. The boys assume that he laid an egg, so when Perry rushes off for his day job, the boys decide to care for it. Candace, moved by a nature documentary, decides to take over mothering duties for the egg.

Meanwhile, Dr. Doofenshmirtz is out in the midst of the ocean. When Doofenshmirtz was younger, he took his girlfriend out to the sea with a whale translator (since she loved whales), but the whales trash-talked Doofenshmirtz, causing her to jump in the sea and live with them. Now, as revenge, Doofenshmirtz has taught himself whale song, and plans to use it to give the whales a piece of his mind.

Tropes

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Doof's backstory: she left him for a trash-talking whale. Present-day Doof decides to learn whale song to insult the whale as revenge.
  • Artistic License – Biology:
    • In-Universe. The boys believe their male pet laid an egg (well, they are children).
    • Also, Doof's ex has been living in the body of a whale (complete with a kitchen) for some time without decomposing first.
  • The Cat Came Back: Thinking so little of Doof's scheme, Perry leaves without trying to thwart him. Doof proceeds to follow him everywhere, demanding that Perry thwart him.
Doofenshmirtz: Thwart me, Perry the Platypus!
  • Disney Acid Sequence: Some parts of "Technology vs. Nature" is this.
  • Egg-Laying Male: Discussed. The episode deals with Phineas and Ferb incubating a bird egg under the belief that it's an egg Perry laid, which notably does not cause them to deviate from their assumption that Perry is male.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Perry had thwarted many of Dr. Doofenshmirtz's schemes, no matter how silly they would get. But when his scheme was learning whale speak so he could get back at them for stealing his girlfriend, Perry just leaves in disgust.
  • Evil Is Petty: Doofenshmirtz's Evil Plan here is to insult a whale for stealing his girlfriend, which he lampshades as he's chasing Perry:
Doofenshmirtz: Hey, what about the fact I held a petty grudge against an inferior mammal after all these years, huh?
  • Goofy Print Underwear: When the New Pneumatic Transporter sucks all of the fur off Perry's body, we see that he's wearing boxer shorts with hearts on them.
  • Hypocrite: Candace doesn't want to get up and walk five feet to change the channel after the remote stops working.. but she will get up and walk five feet to make popcorn.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Candace mutters to herself that she feels as if she is the only normal one in her family... all while wearing a platypus costume.
  • Impossibly-Compact Folding: The Platyposterior folds to a flat disc that is small enough to fit in Ferb's pocket.
  • Irony: After a summer of trying and failing to get Linda to see Phineas and Ferb's countless projects, Linda ends up seeing Candace's first one. Candace even lampshades this.
  • Mother Nature, Father Science: The boys' solution to the unattended egg is a giant robotic platypus machine to incubate it until it hatches. Candace, having just watched a nature documentary, admonishes them for this cold and clinical approach and pushes them to be more hands on.
  • Nature Documentary: Candace watches one about turtles because the TV remote's not working and she is too lazy to get up to change the channel. (But not too lazy to make some popcorn.)
  • Nature Is Not Nice: Although the details aren't shown onscreen, the threat of predators to newborn turtles is shown in the documentary in all its detail, which contributes to why Candace feels so strongly about rearing the egg hands on.
  • No Name Given: For once, this is averted. Doof's ex-girlfriend, the one who left him for the whale, is given the name "Elizabeth" at the end.
  • Poke the Poodle: Doof's entire plan was to teach himself whale song just to insult one whale that wronged him.
  • Precision F-Strike: Played with. When Monogram reveals that the pneumatic transporter made him bald, he says, "The new pneumatic transporter sucks. I mean, literally, sucked every piece of hair off my body." (Normally, TV-Y rated shows would use the word "stinks" instead.)
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Candace's eyes grow when she learns of the fate of the baby turtle in the nature documentary.
Major Monogram: (in character commentary) Why are her eyes wiggling like that? It's giving me the heebie-jeebies.
  • Raised by Robots: The boys' solution for the egg is a platyposterior.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Doof's plan is so stupid and not evil that Perry leaves without trying to thwart him.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Candace calls her platypus costume a "mom suit". When Linda hears this, she is somewhat offended. Later, when Jeremy comes over, he compliments her for her "mom suit".
    Candace: See?! He gets it!
  • Wrong On So Many Levels: Candace's reaction to everything about the "platyposterior" plan. That said, her mom returning home to her version of the plan isn't so far off.
  • Your Tomcat Is Pregnant: Subverted. Phineas and Ferb thought that Perry laid an egg, but in reality they accidentally rolled an egg out of its nest and right behind Perry.
