Recap / Phineas And Ferb Doof 101

Go To

Dr. Doofenshmirtz is sentenced to community service for being evil and much to his daughter Vanessa’s chagrin, he’s assigned to teach science at her high school. Meanwhile, a trio of bugs embark on a journey to become the first insects to communicate with humans.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Doof seems to be teaching his students how to make a scientific formula, but then he drinks it and nothing happens. Turns out he was just showing them how to brew a perfect shirley temple.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: Principal Lang has one. He's annoyed how it always makes him look like he's brooding.
  • Butt-Monkey: Johnny, who is now Vanessa's ex and gets relentlessly mocked by Heinz for being a whiner about angsting over her. Then he gets turned into a monster.
  • Demoted to Extra: Phineas and Ferb only make a brief cameo.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Doof sings, "There's 261 days 'til next summer vacation..."
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: The principal hisses threateningly at Doofenshmirtz that he's watching him, backing away to make this clear. Unfortunately, he doesn't look where he's going and falls into a washroom.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Principal Lang hates Doofenshmirtz for marrying Charlene, who Lang was in love with. He refuses to let go of his grudge even though Charlene and Doofenshmirtz are now divorced.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Johnny who wants to get back with Vanessa, and mistakes her saving his life as a sign that there's hope for them.
  • Just Friends: Vanessa tries to convince Johnny she doesn't hate him and they could be still be friends.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Both Vanessa and Perry serve as this to Heinz, who is busy for most of the episode making the antidote and therefore they're involved in chasing down Johnny. Justified as they're the only ones used to Heinz's antics.
  • LEGO Genetics: Doofenshmirtz invokes this in his lecture, and then accidentally makes Johnny part lizard and part gorilla.
  • Mythology Gag: The talking bugs were initially going to be part of the series proper, as Dan Povenmire shared via his pitch drawings on Twitter.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, at one point during the summer, Doof stole all the blue from the art museum, causing Pablo Picasso's Blue Period to look beige.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Johnny is depressed about Vanessa breaking up with him.
  • Poorly Disguised Pilot: According to Word Of God, this episode was written as a potential spin-off.
  • Rearrange the Song: In this case, Perry's theme. "Doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-bah, doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-bah, scary teenage monster..."
  • Special Guest: Gary Cole voices Principal Lang, Jennifer Grey voices his secretary, Danica McKellar plays Becky (Vanessa's blonde-haired friend who happens to carry a crossbow), and the Bug Trio consists of J. K. Simmons as Napoleon, Josh Gad as Wendell, and Stephen Root as Floyd.
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Napoleon tends to use big words. A Running Gag is that Wendell and Floyd believe "bivouac" means excrement.
  • Talking Animal: The bugs Napoleon, Wendell, and Floyd.
