Recap / Phineas And Ferb Attack Of The Fifty Foot Sister

Go To

Phineas and Ferb try to help Baljeet avoid great shame by enlarging his entry in a watermelon-growing contest. When Candace finds she's too short to audition to be a model for Flawless Girl cosmetics, she steals some formula to make herself taller, only to accidentally turn into a giant.

Meanwhile, Dr. Doofenshmirtz plans to sabotage the Tri-State Midsummer Fair by dousing it in the scent of dirty diapers with his "Smell-inator".

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: On fashion standards and feeling good about oneself.
  • Artistic License – Physics: If the universe actually grew as it did in the episode, the enlargement of the sun coupled with the lack of distance between planets would cause the solar system to burn up like ants under a magnifying glass. In addition, gravity would be increased to the point where it would cause catastrophic destruction. Then again, it's a cartoon.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: As indicated by the title. Candace uses a growth elixir the boys made in order to grow an extra two inches; it makes her gigantic instead.
  • Bat Signal: "It's the Baljeet Signal!"
  • Big Head Mode: At one point, Candace has an enormous head in a form known as "Bobble Head Candace".
  • Brick Joke: Perry enters his lair through the neighbor's koi pond, but accidentally takes the koi with him. Major Monogram suggests giving them hats and making them agents to avoid a lawsuit. Later, the koi help Perry defeat Doof.
  • Bring Me My Brown Pants: Once Baljeet's watermelon becomes gigantic, he says, "I am going to need a crane! And a new pair of pants."
  • Chekhov's Gunman: At the beginning of the episode, Perry the Platypus enters O.W.C.A. headquarters through a secret entrance in his neighbors' koi pond, bringing three fish inside with him. To avoid a lawsuit, Major Monogram decides to give the fish hats and make them agents. Later, as Doofenshmirtz is about to activate the Smell-inator, the three fish land on Doofenshmirtz's head (soaking him with water in the process) and free Perry the Platypus from his trap.
  • Cute Giant: Candace when she becomes 50 feet (15 meters) tall.
  • Dressed in Layers: P.P. Otter just happens to be wearing a gorilla suit under his tuxedo.
  • The Freakshow: P.P. Otter (obviously an Expy of P.T. Barnum) is the master of ceremonies for what the series refers to as an "oddball show", since calling it a "freak show" would spark controversy.
  • Giant's Droplet, Human's Shower: Candace cries a Single Tear when she thinks she has become a freak. Because of her size, the boys use an umbrella to prevent themselves from getting soaked.
  • Giant Woman: Candace becomes one after using the growth elixir.
  • Height Angst: Candace doesn't take it well when she is told that she is two inches too short (or, as she puts it, "two inches too ugly") to be a Flawless Girl.
  • I Am a Monster: Candace considers herself this after she becomes gigantic.
  • Impossibly-Compact Folding: Ferb's chemistry set, which is small enough to fit inside a suitcase, expands into a full-sized laboratory.
  • "King Kong" Climb: Inverted. P.P. decides to have Candace climb the Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated building while he is wearing a gorilla suit. P.P. lampshades this, calling it "a reversal of a familiar theme".
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Candace is unamused when Phineas introduces her as his "big sister".
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase:
    • (Perry stumbles in playing a banjo) A banjo-playing platypus? (puts on fedora) PERRY THE BANJO-PLAYING PLATYPUS!??!!
    • "Giant Candace is out, PEACE!"
  • Mobile Shrubbery: Giant!Candace hides in a tent and crawls towards Phineas' booth with the tent still over her back.
    Candace: Phineas?
    Phineas: Yes, strange talking tent?
  • Never My Fault: Candace believes that the boys were responsible for making her gigantic, even though she was the one who used the growth elixir on herself.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Candace observes that the fashion industry and freakshow runners aren't too different from each other since they both exploit people's body image issues for money.
  • Refuge in Audacity: The Reset Button for this episode uses Doof's Inator per the norm and plays on the fact that Phineas and Ferb's growth elixir only works on something once. This time, Doof's Inator of the Episode douses the entire universe with it, returning everything back to relative size to Candace.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Source Music: Doof is recording the "Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated" jingle when Perry enters. Also doubles as Left the Background Music On.
    Singers: Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated...
Doofenshmirtz: What the?! Oh, the festival is so loud I can't even hear my own Evil Jingle. (to the singers) Okay, guys, take it from the top. Louder!
    Singer: A-one, two...
    Singers: Doofenshmirtz Evil Inco—
    (Perry crashes in)
    Doofenshmirtz: Oh! What now?
  • Status Quo Is God: Doof accidentally uses Phineas and Ferb's growth elixir in his Smell-inator on the entire universe making everything in the universe bigger, thereby causing Candace and Baljeet's watermelon to be normal-sized by comparison.
    Candace: I'm back to normal!
  • Tempting Fate: As Doofenshmirtz prepares to fire the Smell-inator, he says, "You hear that, Perry the Platypus? That is the sound of smell. Nothing can stop me now!". Immediately afterwards, the three koi fish arrive and land on his head.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Candace assumes that her brothers' growth elixir only makes whatever it's used on grow a few inches when Baljeet's watermelon slightly increases in size. This is despite her knowing that Phineas and Ferb regularly accomplish the impossible with big and grand inventions.
  • You Must Be This Tall to Ride: A non-ride variant occurs with the Flawless Girl auditions. As the song indicates, the Flawless Girl is never under 5'10" (1.77 m), and Candace is 5'8" (1.72 m).
Blanca Dishon: Aren't you a little short to be a Flawless Girl?
    Candace: Well, I—
Blanca Dishon: Yes. Yes, you are.
