Recap / Penny Dreadful S 3 E 4 A Blade Of Grass

Go To

In order to better understand the plight that she has been given to deal with, Vanessa has used her intelligence and cunning to convince the skilled Dr. Seward into using an unconventional approach in therapy to send her back in time. But the buried memories brought forth from her time in "the white room" reveal far more than her enemies.

Tropes:

  • Acting For Three: Rory Kinnear plays The Orderly, Lucifer, and Dracula.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: Dracula is revealed to be this to Lucifer.
  • Bottle Episode: The episode takes place almost entirely in Vanessa's padded cell (with the exception of a brief appearance of Dr. Seward's office at the end).
  • Composite Character: The show makes Dracula a fallen angel and brother of Lucifer, but he also claims to have a tomb, meaning some of his backstory from Dracula is canon here.
  • Death Seeker: Vanessa becomes this in the hospital, attempting to starve herself, but the orderly takes measures to keep her alive, such as force-feeding her, and putting her in a strait jacket.
  • Gods Need Prayer Badly: Dracula mocks Lucifer, telling him that while Dracula's power is based on feeding on life, Lucifer only can feed on death, and continues to grow weaker as more of humanity stops believing in him.
  • Dramatic Irony: The Orderly doesn't like poetry, and lacks John Clare's Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness. He also finds the idea of someone living in the frozen north heartbreaking, and is actually decent at applying makeup.
  • Heroic BSoD: Vanessa spends the episode going in and out of multiple ones.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Dr. Seward pours one for her and one for Vanessa at the end, after Vanessa emerges from her fugue state.
  • Internal Reveal: Vanessa finally learns the Master Vampire's name. Dracula.
  • Manly Tears: The Orderly breaks down crying to Vanessa after revealing that her surgery is to be the next day.
  • Meatgrinder Surgery: The Orderly reveals that the drill the doctor will use on Vanessa isn't even designed for medicine. It's a wood drill.
  • Minimalist Cast: Out of the entire cast, only Vanessa, Dr. Seward, and The Creature (in his previous life) appear. Christian Camargo (Dracula/Dr. Sweet) has his voice dubbed in when Dracula takes the form of the Orderly.
  • The Mirror Shows Your True Self: The Orderly tries to convince Vanessa of this, after applying makeup to her face, and showing the results, telling her to not forget who she is.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: "I am the demon. I am the dragon. My name is Dracula."
  • No Name Given: Caliban/John Clare's former self is simply known as The Orderly.
  • Not Afraid of You Anymore: Vanessa reveals that she no longer fears the Master Vampire anymore, having learned that deep down she is more powerful than him and Lucifer. "I'm not afraid of him anymore. His name is Dracula."
  • Nothing Is Scarier: All of Vanessa's "treatments" take place offscreen, with only the buildup and aftermaths shown. The effect is quite unsettling.
  • Oh, Crap!: Multiple examples
    • Vanessa whenever Lucifer appears.
    • Dr. Seward when she can't end the hypnotherapy session.
    • Lucifer of all people when Dracula enters.
    • Both brothers when Vanessa recites the Verbis Diablo.
  • The Shadow Knows: Lucifer's shadow becomes that of a massive serpent, which winds itself around Vanessa before returning to him. Dracula's becomes a giant bat when he appears.
  • Seduction-Proof Marriage: The Orderly reveals that he has one after he rejects Vanessa's advances. Followed by a silent Please Put Some Clothes On.
  • They Would Cut You Up: The Orderly tries to convince Vanessa to at least pretend to show mental improvement from the "treatments", or risk the doctor cutting into her brain.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Vanessa's defense against the reality of her situation.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Vanessa is subject to one before her surgery.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: The reason for Vanessa demanding herself be hypnotized.
  • We Can Rule Together: Both Lucifer and Dracula try this on Vanessa.
