Go To

As Vanessa continually struggles with the mysterious forces tracking her every move, the beleaguered witch meets a familiar face who divulges details and clues to her past as a child of a wealthy family who was later possessed.

Tropes:

  • A-Team Firing: Ethan and Hecate evade the police firing team quite easily, mostly because they are trying to shoot them from several hundred feet away.
  • Berserk Button: Justine is initially hesitant to murder her past tormentor, but the second Lily reminds her that the world calls her "whore", she cuts his throat without hesitation.
  • Blood Lust: Renfield begins having a more difficult time with his new craving, and resorts to eating a fly when he can't satisfy it with Dracula's blood.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The two racist cowboys harassing Kaetenay come across as this. They also try the same thing with Sir Malcolm, only to realise they're completely out of their depth trying to intimidate him.
  • Did Not Think This Through: The familiar doesn't seem to have thought about the consequences of stalking and intimidating his master's would-be-bride. He learns the hard way that you don't cross Dracula.
  • Fan Disservice: The blood-drenched threesome is a little off.
  • Foil: The protesting suffragettes serve as one to Lily's ideology: while they strive for equality of the sexes, Lily is a blatant female supremacist and won't back off from drastic methods (after quietly amassing power instead of loudly protesting).
  • Hall of Mirrors: Vanessa gets isolated in one and, as she's starting to panic, is confronted by one of the familiars.
  • Hemo Erotic: Lily, Dorian and Justine have a threesome while completely covered in blood.
  • Initiation Ceremony: To become a full member of their family, Dorian presents Justine with a dagger and her longstanding tormentor, bound, gagged and stripped on a chair. She slits his throat without hesitation and proceeds to stab his corpse multiple times until she's all covered in blood.
  • Internal Reveal: The familiar reveals to Vanessa that she has actually met Dracula before, telling her she and "the other one" (Lucifer) were alone together once in the "White Room where there was no time". However, Vanessa does not remember this.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When the Creature sees Vanessa alone he starts to go over to greet her, but when Dr Sweet arrives and she takes his arm, he simply smiles and stays out of sight.
  • Lecherous Licking: The familiar tries to freak Vanessa out by licking her neck in the hall of mirrors. Vanessa shrugs it off.
  • The Lost Lenore: Dracula-as-Sweet reveals to Vanessa that he is a widower, and that his wife passed away just over a year ago. Knowing Dracula, he is probably referring to Mina.
  • Madness Mantra: Renfield begins obsessively writing Vanessa's name over and over again in his notebook.
  • Monstrous Cannibalism: Dracula's mob of familiars eagerly pile on, and chomp on, a fellow minion whom their master brutally struck down for disobedience.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Hecate combines this with both Armor-Piercing Question and "The Reason You Suck" Speech with Ethan after he glowers at her for casually murdering two ranchers who caught them stealing horses.
Hecate: Because I murder with will and not like a blind animal, you think me a monster? How many corpses have you left in your wake, Ethan? When there are bodies stretched from here to the horizon, and you can walk across them without touching the ground, then you can weep.
  • Not So Stoic: When Justine recounts her brutally abusive past, Lily is visibly uncomfortable and tears form in her eyes.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: The vampires we see have no trouble moving in daylight and clearly do cast reflections.
  • Super-Strength: One could have reasonably assumed Dracula would have this, but we see the full extent of it for the first time when he sends his disobedient minion flying across a large room with a single blow.
  • The One That Got Away: Lily reveals to Justine that she views Ethan as this, as he was the only man who didn't want to "Fuck me or beat me", but actually love her for who she was as Brona.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Where does Hecate choose to hide the unconscious Ethan after he's killed most of the bar patrons. In a Stable directly across the street from said bar.
  • This Is Reality: Dr. Seward reiterates to Vanessa that hypnotism is very different from the versions seen in popular culture, and describes the effects very accurately.
  • Tranquil Fury: When a couple of cowboys start harassing Kaetenay for being a Native American in a whites-only train carriage, Sir Malcolm gets to his feet and calmly says that if they don't back off, he'll happily kill them without a second thought. The cowboys choose to back off.
Sir Malcolm Murray: Before you speak another word, I ask you to consider this. How valuable is your life? Do you hold it dear? Does your wife value your company? Do you favour growing old to one day teach your ugly, inbred children your grotesque manners? Lay hands on him and that'll be your end.
  • We Can Rule Together: Hecate reveals this is her endgame with Ethan. "To rule the darkness at your side."
  • Wham Shot: We find out who Vanessa's orderly was during her stay in the asylum: pre-mortem John Clare.
  • You Have Failed Me: When one of Dracula's familiars decides to go off-script with Vanessa, Dracula angrily orders his minions to eat him.
