Recap / Peg + Cat S1E54 "The Pirate Puzzle Problem"

Go To

We open on Peg and Cat sailing with the pirates on their ship, on a "play date" apparently. She introduces them: Captain, Matey, Buckler, Greybeard, and their nameless parrot. The parrot takes interest in Cat's hat, while Captain shows Peg some treasure and a treasure map.

Peg asks what games they could play, and Matey says, "Get down!". Peg thinks he is referring to a game called Get Down, but he is actually meaning to duck a cannonball, which thankfully doesn't hit anyone. They decide to build a smiley-face puzzle out of gemstones, but the pirates become frustrated over their failure to connect the pieces and Peg is worried as she hates it when the pirates get cranky.

The pirates sing badly to express their frustration, so Cat uses earplugs, which gives Peg the idea of helping the pirates fit pieces together the way the earplugs fit. She explains to the pirates how to do the puzzle and they complete it while singing.

Unfortunately, a piece is missing, so they use Buckler's buckle. However, Greybeard offends Buckler by calling the buckle silly, causing the two to argue. They then decide not to play with each other, which is problematic, as Peg and Cat want to play with all four of them.

Captain, Matey, Peg, and Cat decide to play Get Down, which is like Twister, only it doesn't specify which hands and feet you need to use. They hope that Greybeard and Buckler will stop being grumpy and join in the game, but they don't. In fact, things get worse when Captain and Matey argue over who's won, and they also refuse to play with each other. Then, the four of them decide to get their share of the treasure.

Peg tries to convince them that there's more to life than treasure, but that only makes them fight over the map and rip it to bits, then a cannonball gets fired and splits the ship into four pieces, causing it to start sinking. Peg, understandably, totally freaks out.

This inevitably leads to the count backwards— Cat does something— "Eureka!" Moment sequence. Specifically, he plays with the puzzle, which gives Peg the idea of fixing the ship by linking the pieces together. However, they'd have to work together, and the pirates are still unwilling to cooperate. However, Peg convinces them by reminding them of the times they've collaborated in the past, and they fix it and tie it together, sealing it with Buckler's buckle.

The pirates apologise to each other, and Ramone, who was filming a video with the Pig, returns the treasure map. She apologises for the play date being flawed, but the pirates claim that the flaws just made it better. Then, they sing a shanty about teamwork.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • Cat wears a pirate hat, and he also wears earplugs when the pirates sing.
    • The Pig wears sunglasses.
  • An Aesop: This episode has the 'No "I" in team' moral.
  • Alliterative Title: The Pirate Puzzle Problem.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: At one point, Buckler calls Greybeard a "stinky ninny-noony head".
  • Captain Colorbeard: This episode reveals that the black, elderly pirate is named Greybeard.
  • Chewing the Scenery: The pirates sing off-key to express their frustration.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The objects latching together is portrayed alongside the idea of teamwork.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Cat still believes in calming down and casually plays with the puzzle, even though the ship is sinking.
  • Dressed to Plunder: Peg and Cat don pirate hats along with the actual pirates.
  • Feud Episode: The episode's conflict is that the pirates are refusing to play with each other.
  • Friendship Song: The ending number is about how the pirates will stick together despite their differences and squabbles.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: The pirates' grumpy song is very off-key.
  • Idiot Ball: The pirates get so caught up in their tiff that they refuse to work together even though their ship is sinking.
  • Manchild: The pirates' squabbling is very immature, with lines like "vica-versa ditto times a million" and "I'm not playing with you again!". Even Captain, who, if his nickname means anything, ought to be in charge of keeping everyone in line, behaves like a little kid.
  • No Name Given: The pirates have names, or at least nicknames (Captain, Matey, Buckler, and Greybeard), but their parrot is just "the parrot".
  • The Perfectionist: Peg frequently loses it over the play date not being perfect.
  • Polly Wants a Microphone: The parrot talks like a human.
  • Pun: The pirates do the old "Me too" "Me three" bit.
  • Understatement: Captain describes his pirate neighbours as "rowdy" for firing cannons at him and his crew.
  • Who's on First?: The command "get down" and the game Get Down are often confused with each other.
