Recap / Peg + Cat S1E53 "The Butter Problem"

Go To

Peg and Cat are at the farm, anticipating a butter-sculpting contest. They then notice that the farmer is at the top of the stage, holding it together and needs Peg and/or Cat to pass him the correct piece of wood out of a pile. Peg worries that she will not be able to, but the farmer says that it is like doing a puzzle and says that sometimes, knowledge of one thing can help with another. So, using logic, they find the correct piece and place it there. However, Cat, who is distracted by a joke he made, slips on a piece of butter and knocks the stage down. The farmer will be too busy to teach them how to sculpt butter, but hands them a book.

Peg and Cat then run into the teens, who ask them if they have come to watch them sculpt butter. Peg and Cat say that they plan to sculpt with butter. Tessa asks if they know how and Peg responds in the affirmative and takes out the book but it turns out that the farmer accidentally gave them a book of farm chores. Embarrassed, they run into the barn.

There, Peg is unhappy but gets distracted by a dirty pig (no, not the Pig). Cat tries to wash the pig but the soap comes off. Peg then finds instructions for washing the pig, which they do so. They then observe the teens through the window and notice a cow who seems out of sorts. Peg says that the farmer forgot to milk the cow and they do so, again following the instructions in the book.

They look out at the teens again but have trouble seeing, so they lean over and fall down, knocking over the scarecrow. They use the book again to rebuild it. The farmer then turns up and they show him that the book is wrong and then see that the teens have sculpted a pizza (Jessie), a cell phone (Mora) and a bag (Tessa). Peg begins to freak out but is interrupted by the farmer, who reminds her about applying her knowledge like they did before, and they sculpt butter while others sing about applying knowledge. Peg and Cat then win first prize.

This episode provides examples of

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Cat is a dark blue cat.
  • Ambiguous Gender: We don't find out the sexes of the hog or the crows.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Peg says that butter sculpting is "the coolest thing since...", then Cat sees the teens and shouts, "Teenagers!". Even more appropriate because Peg sees the teens as extremely cool.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": A cat named Cat, and also the Pig shows up towards the end.
  • Catchphrase Interruptus: Peg says, "I've got a really big—" but then the farmer says, "No, you've got no problem at all."
  • Funny Animal: Zigzagged for the animals. All of them seem to walk on two legs, and they all talk... except the dirty pig. Also, they still have animal-like habits.
  • Happy Dance: When Cat asks the cow, "Are you happy now?", she does a little dance.
  • The Klutz: Cat knocks over the stage, trips on butter, gets his tail stuck in the door, and leans on the window too hard, opening it.
  • Large Ham: Peg shows her dramatic side when she sings, "I don't know what can be any worse!" about getting the wrong book.
  • Messy Pig: Zigzagged. A pig is seen dirty, but seems happy to be cleaned.
  • No Name Given: We never find out the names of the farmer or his pets.
  • Potty Dance: Discussed when Cat sees the cow squirming and asks if she needs to go to the bathroom. In actual fact, she was having discomfort due to not being milked.
  • Pun: Cat makes several puns replacing the word "better" with "butter".
  • Shaking the Rump: At one point, Peg and Cat dance and Cat shakes his butt.
  • Signature Laugh: Cat does his "ha-ha-ha, ha-HA-ha" laugh at one point.
  • Slapstick: Reconstructed. Cat trips over butter and falls over comically, but knocks over the stage, however, the stage gets fixed and he gets his happy ending along with Peg, with more slapstick gags along the way.
  • Totally Radical: Peg, the teens, and in one instance, Cat, all use phrases like "totally awesome" in this episode.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The cow is a female, but she has a deep voice.
