Go To

April: When I started working for you, I was aimless and just thought everything was stupid and lame. You turned me into someone with goals and ambition. Which is the reason why I'm even thinking about what I really want. (hugs Leslie) I just want to say thank you, and that I love you very much... which is why I decided not to turn you into a sea urchin, which is what I could do 'cause I'm an actual witch with powers. And I'm evil and I hate everything.

Seeing how April is still lost in trying to find her calling, Leslie jumps at the chance to help, giving April a five-year plan for her career in politics and bringing her to Washington DC, even though April doesn't intend to stay in politics.

While April and Leslie are away, Andy recruits Ben to help discover April's dream job. They first go to Ron's construction company but realize the job isn't for April. Ben then suggests April work for the accountants' firm and meet with Barney Varmn, who's excited to see Ben again.

In Washington DC, April and Leslie meet a bunch of politicians, and eventually, April tells Leslie that she intends to quit politics, which freaks Leslie out and makes her sad and angry. After some time, however, Leslie realizes that she should be supportive of April, and decides to help her to discover her dream job by bringing her to a job search center. After several hours of being interviewed and going through tests, April and the career counselor have figured out what the perfect job for her is - she'll be working at the job search center where she can help other people discover what they want to do and then send them far away from her. Leslie is happy for April.

Back in Pawnee, Andy, Ben, and Ron recruit Garry, Tom, and Donna to review and print April's resume for the accounting firm. However, Andy feels that what they're doing isn't enough, so he dresses up with an April mask and throws firecrackers at Barney's car later that night. When April returns, Andy and April both recount what happened to them. At the accounting firm, Ben and Ron finally convince the company to give April a try, but they receive a phone call telling them that April does not want the job.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Andy pulls out a list he believes is the one April made of qualities her dream job would have, but instead reads what sounds like a shopping list. It turns out they are all potential nicknames.
  • Character Development: As the episode quote shows, April lampshades hers.
  • Failed Future Forecast: Barbara Boxer appears in a cameo role still in office as a United States Senator. While the episode is set in the summer of 2017, the real-life Sen. Boxer retired in January of that year.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: April's still not particularly social, but she does find that her passion is helping others find their passion in life.
  • Rhyme Theme Naming: It is revealed in this episode that Ron has a brother he's never mentioned before named Don Swanson. It's heavily implied (and stated in the credits) that he has two other brothers name Vaughn and Lon. Previous episodes established his son is named John.
  • Running Gag: Barney's excitement and fanboying of Ben. As well as the gag of a new employee being hired at the accounting firm only for them to leave or quit.
