Recap / Paradise PDS 01 E 03 Black And Blue

Go To

When Fitz (who has post-traumatic stress disorder) accidentally shoots himself in the dick, after getting scared by his reflection, he gets massive news publicity, with both liberal and conservative news channels twisting the story to fit their own narratives: CNN reports it as yet another story about a police officer committing police brutality against a black man while FOX News reports it as the heroic story of a police officer fighting back against a black criminal. Meanwhile, Hopson gets sent to a retirement home, but Hopson thinks it's a sting operation.

  • #1 Dime: Fitz' piccolo.
  • Abusive Parents:
    • Dusty reminisces about his abusive mother, who used to throw bricks at him.
Dusty: You know, whenever a brick crashes through the window, it reminds me of my mama. You know every year on my birthday, she made me tuck my samajiggers between my legs, called me an ugly fat woman, and throw bricks at my head. [chuckles] Oh, Mama.
    • These statements are later proven true, in a literal brick joke.
Dusty's Mom: I forgot your birthday, Dusty! Mama loves her ugly little fat woman!
    Dusty: Thanks, mama!
  • Affectionate Nickname: Bullet is referred to as "Fifi", after lying about his identity.
  • Arc Words: "No, Not My Dick!"
  • Ass Shove: In her first with the mobsters, Gina shoves the head of one of the mobsters up another mobster's ass.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Randall says that race relations have never been better in Paradise, ever since they hired "Officer Blacky". Fitz gets offended by this, only to reveal that "Blacky" was the name of an Asian cop, who used to work for them before getting killed on the job.
  • Bleak Abyss Retirement Home: Heaven's Lobby Nursing Home.
  • Discretion Shot: Randall has to change Hopson's diaper. Despite this being a Netflix original and a raunch-com, the writers decide to cut the audience some slack, by not showing us Hopson's naked old droopy dick ... in this episode.
Dusty: It looks like Betty White, holding a dead snake in her mouth!
  • Golden Mean Fallacy: Both liberals and conservatives are mocked and ridiculed equally in this episode.
  • The Load: Fitz is this to Gina in this episode, as he provides no help in fighting criminals and actually blows their cover, by playing the flute, when they're supposed to be hiding.
  • Logic Bomb: Gina induces this on the news pundits by having Fitz, Dusty and herself play out a scenario that combines positions from both sides of their politics, leaving them dumbstruck on how to spin it. Sean Hannity is revealed to be a robot when he malfunctions and explodes from the contradictions.
  • Manipulative Editing: The news channels do this with the G-Fitz situation, in order to make the story fit their own political narratives.
Anderson Cooper: You're watching CNN, where a rogue cop has just taken a black man hostage!
Sean Hannity: You're watching FOX News, where an angry black thug has kidnapped a police officer!
  • Mondegreen Gag: Fitz gets himself in trouble with one of these.
Fitz: If anyone's hurt, see Kyle the medic. See Kyle! See Kyle!
  • The Mafiya: The Russian mobsters trading guns for argyle meth.
  • People Farms: The retirement home that Randall sent Hopson to turns out to be a Red Lobster-owned cryogenic farm of elderly humans where the Red Lobster crew inject marine wildlife DNA into their bodies so that they grow delicious meals such as lobster arms and scallops. Bullet's line, "RED LOBSTER IS OLD PEOPLE?!" is a parody of the famous line "SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!"
  • Police Brutality:
    • A concept that is mocked and parodied in this episode, when Fitz, a black cop, inflicts violence upon himself, leading to liberal and conservative news outlets twisting the story to fit their own political rhetorics.
    • And it was also played straight when Gina kicked the shit out of the Russian mobsters on the docks.
Gina: SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS, YOU GOD DAMNED TWAT WAFFLE!!!
  • Sanity Slippage: Fitz slowly but surely starts to lose his mind, when he gets his piccolo confiscated.
  • Self-Harm: Fitz shoots himself in the dick.
  • Split Personality: Fitz goes insane and splits himself into dual personalities. A badass police officer and a crime-causing thug.
  • Status Quo Is God: Stanley forces Randall to un-retire him and let him work as a cop again, by strangling him with his newly mutated lobster claw, which of course, also disappears in the next episode.
  • Strawman Political: Pretty much every real-life news reporter in this episode.
  • Talking to Themself: Fitz does this, when he experiences Multiple Personality Disorder.
  • Tempting Fate: While Fitz was relieved that his dick was safe, he thought that no one was around to saw the scene. Cue the video of such scene shown on CNN news.
  • Token Minority: Because of the fact that Fitz is this to Paradise P.D., Randall refuses to fire him, on account of affirmative action despite that Fitz never does his job.
  • Two-Timer Date: Fitz has to show up at two political rallies. One for Blue Lives Matter and one for Black Lives Matter. He's supposed to play the role of a heroic cop for the police officers and a defenseless victim at the black people. Unfortunately, things go wrong and Fitz eventually ends up looking like a murderous ruffian in front of the cops and a racist Klansman in front of the African-Americans.
  • Vampire Vords: The Russian Mobster talks like this.
Robby: Anybody ever tell you, you sound like that vampire motherfucker, who counts shit on Sesame Street?
