Recap / Paperinik New Adventures S 1 E 43 Just One Breath

Go To

Ziggy Flaggstar runs into a mysterious girl with odd blank eyes, pursued by some threatening men in black. Soon enough, Mary Ann and Paperinik are involved, as they find out about the girl's past, her psychic powers and the organization who wants her back...

  • The Ace: A quick glance at Ziggy's file reveals that he had top scores in most subjects taught at P.B.I. and it shows.
  • Always Save the Girl: How Ziggy ends up in this story.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: It's left ambiguous, but it's implied that Ethan is Froud's biological son. Depends on wether you consider him calling Max "father" ironical or literal. It would explain why Max cares so much about him.
  • Arc Words: "Breathe". This is some sort of mantra used both by Jana and Ethan.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Subverted, when PK arrives in Mary Ann's house he's seen eating an apple, commenting on its flavor. Mary Ann informs him that it's made of wax, causing him to spit... but then Ziggy informs them that he swapped them for real fruit.
  • Brought Down to Normal: What ultimately happens to Jana after she uses all her powers to cause a landslide and prevent a flood. She's perfectly happy with that.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Ziggy curb-stomps the rude agents in black in the airport he apologize to an old lady who was sitting nearby. She tells him she doesn't matter, altough she'd prefer he had used boxe rather than karate.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Plenty of focus on Ziggy in this volume.
  • De-power: Halfway through, Jana is briefly depowered when Uno finds a way to temporarly give her powers to PK so that he can fight Ethan on equal footing.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Jana wonders who's throwing guns down the chimney, Mary Ann claims that it can't be Santa Claus, he would have packeted them up first.
  • Disney Villain Death: The last time we see Ethan, he lets himself fall from a crumbling dam into the rushing water flow below. While they Never Found the Body it's implied he didn't survive.
  • Entitled to Have You: Ethan for Jana. He seemingly expects her to be with him only because both share psychic powers, and because he revealed to her his greatest ambition.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Max Froud is an amoral and manipulative executive, who nonetheless shows a good deal of respect for Ethan, tries to reason with him when his rage gets the better of him and is visibly shocked when the latter lets himself fall into the abyss. Also worth noticing that he tried to save Ethan even after the latter unleashed his powers on him, and seems to care for his wellbeing.
  • Excuse Me While I Multitask: Offscreen, PK takes down and disarms several Factory agents while eating three apples. And a banana.
  • Fatal Flaw: For all his powers and charisma, Ethan is far too impulsive and has trouble controlling himself when he's angry.
  • A God Am I: Ethan. He shows Jana some ancient ruins depicting classical gods and demigods, only to start ranting about how "gifted" people like he and Jana should use their powers to rule over the other men like gods.
  • Guyliner: Ethan's Gag Lips are green, though it's unclear if it's makeup or a side effect of his powers.
  • Ironic Echo: Invoked by PK, who throws back Ethan's "Yes, I can do that" from earlier when he shoots him with his psychic powers.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Jana is clearly distressed by her own powers and is much happier without them.
  • The Men in Black: The agents of Factory, the organization raising a generation of psychis to Take Over the World.
  • Mook Horror Show: Downplayed, though when Factory mooks are attacking Mary Ann's mansion, PK, from the shadows, proceed to defeat them one by one, the only sign being the occasional guns, googles and apple cores thrown inside.
  • Mundane Utility: Paperinik's first application of his psychic powers? Make donuts float from a distant plate to his open mouth.
  • Mysterious Waif: Jana, a mysterious pink-haired girl with blank eyes pursued by black-clad strangers. Clearly the sign that an adventure is coming!
  • Possession Implies Mastery: Averted, when One uses his powers to give Jana's powers to PK, he has to spend a whole night training to use them properly.
  • Power Limiter: Factory deploys "Restraining Hoods" on their psychics to keep their powers under control. However, Ethan is so powerful the Hood does nothing to him.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Max Froud. While he's adopting and training powerful psychichs for nefarious plots, he stress that only by clear thinking and strategy he'll be able to Take Over the World, shooting down Ethan's proposal of using brute force to conquer the world. He also saves Mary Ann and Ziggy from Ethan's wrath, as they can serve as hostages to lure Jana out.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: Paperink makes one before trying to slug Ethan with his shield... but unfortunately, he didn't took his pyschic powers in account.
Paperinik:"Ok big boy, you can open a plothole with a nasty look... but can you do this?!" (shoots the shield)
Ethan:(Stopping the Extransformer midair)"Well yes, buffoon... I can do that." (sends it back).
  • Prophet Eyes: As a sign of their ESP powers, both Jana and Ethan have blank, greenish eyes. Jana's turn to normal after she loses her powers.
  • Psychic Powers: Jana and Ethan have them, as well as many other people adopted by Factory, which plans to use them to dominate the world. As evidenced by both, they can move objects with their mind, read minds and sense people, sends people flying with a glance and even stops someone's breath. Oddly enough, Ethan scoffs at Ziggy when he identifies his powers as mere Telekinesis.
  • Reverse Shrapnel: Much to Ethan's shock, PK proves able to use the rabble caused by the former's attack to attack him by having all the rabble converge on him, implying that it requires an incredible control.
  • Take My Hand!: Oddly enough, is the villain, Max Froud, who reaches at Ethan as he's dangling from the crumbling dam and begs him to take his hand. Ethan rejects what he considers his "last order" and apparently choose suicide.
  • Taking a Third Option: When Froud and Ethan pulls an Hostage Situation on PK and asks for Jana, rather than giving her in or trying to have her, who's currently under Power Limiter, Paperinik cuts the knot by having Uno using his technology to temporarly transfer Jana's powers to him, so that he can use the powers to defeat Ethan.
  • Villainous Breakdown: A rage-induced one for Ethan when Froud tries to use Jana as an hostage to stop PK. With a bit of The Dog Bites Back thrown in.
Ethan: "You know what? I'm fed up with you! Fed up with Factory, fed up with everything!!"
Froud: "Calm down Ethan, you don't even know what you can cause if you lose control..."
Ethan: " 'Calm down Ethan', 'relax Ethan', 'take a good breath Ethan', ENOUGH!"
Ethan: "I don't want your help! All I want is that you stay back! Did you hear me? (Blasts Froud down) BACK!"
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Ethan has a wild long mane of white hair, but deep down is a psychotic, rageaholic madman with a god complex.
