Recap / Paperinik New Adventures S 1 E 13 Trauma

Go To

Worried that Earth's resistance to the Evronian invasion might cause troubles in their colonies, top Evronian scientist Gorthan decides to unleash one of his old projects, the Super-Soldier Trauma, to destroy Paperinik. Meanwhile our hero is having trouble due to some nightmares caused by past events...

Tropes Present In This Issue:

  • Apathetic Citizens: After Trauma knocks the helicopter of Channel 00 News out of the sky, instead of being worried about the people inside, some complain because the broadcast was interrupted during the best part.
  • Art Shift: When Trauma makes Paperinik live his worst fear the drawings become more kid-friendly. Justified in that is a flashback to when Donald was a kid. Additionally, the panel layout has been made intentionally more reminiscent of the more traditional Disney comic books, that is, as a six-panel grid.
  • Big "NO!": Paperinik has two: one near the beginning of the issue when he wakes up from his nightmare, and another almost at the endwhen he stops Trauma's powers.
  • Blood Knight: Trauma loves fighting strong opponents: he even stated the best fun of his life was fighting the giant robots the Evron Senate sent after him, and thanked them. It all changes at the end...
  • Car Fu: Paperinik tries this tactic several times with Trauma, with little to no effect.
  • Catapult Nightmare: When Donald wakes up screaming.
  • Damsel in Distress: At one point of the fight Paperinik must climb on Notre Duck to save a girl Trauma kidnapped. Except there wasn't a girl:Trauma lured him out thanks to his power to change voice.
  • Determinator: Despite having been... well traumatized by their first encounter, almost being transformed in a coolflame and knowing that the Pi-kar is too damaged to work, Paperinik is more than ready to attack Trauma with his bare hands if he had to. Thankfully One as a Mini-Mecha ready.
  • Emotion Eater: All Evronians are, but Trauma takes it a step further: he can cause fear thanks to his powers and absorb it without an Evrongun.
  • Enemy Mine: A rare villainous example:the members of the two Gang of Hats were ready to fight each other, but quickly team up against Paperinik. Not that it helps them...
  • Gang of Hats: Two appear in this issue: one based on rock and roll from the fifties and another on the kolossals about Ancient Rome. According to Paperinik there are others.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Evronians are so worried that Paperinik might become a symbol of resistance that they are willing to free Trauma, an infamous traitor, to get rid of him.
    • Every single prisoner in The Well is kept there in case they're needed for such a situation.
  • Heroic Willpower: What in the end allows Paperinik to overcome his fear and Trauma.
  • Hope Bringer: What the Evronians are afraid Paperinik could become.
  • Kryptonite-Proof Suit: The helm of the Mini-Mecha that Paperinik uses blocks Trauma's power. At least until he tore it off.
  • I Know What You Fear: Trauma can make you feel your worst fear, then feed from it and trasform you in a coolflame.
  • Immune to Bullets: They just bounce on Trauma.
  • Mini-Mecha: One gives it to Paperinik to fight in equals terms with Trauma.
  • One-Man Army: In a flashback we see that even after his soldiers left him, Trauma was able to fight alone several giant robots and destroy almost all of them.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: They never reveal what Trauma's name was before he was a super soldier.
  • Psychic Powers: As if being a nine foot tall alien with Super-Strength and Super-Toughness wasn't enough.
  • School Bullying Is Harmless: Averted: Donald still has nightmares of when he was bullied as a kid. It was also the worst fear that Trauma's powers found.
  • Super-Soldier: Trauma is the second to appear, and insisted to become one.
  • Super-Strength: The muscles on Trauma aren't a decoration.
  • Unfinished, Untested, Used Anyway: The mech Paperinik uses is an incomplete invention of Ducklair and has low battery.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Early in the issue Paperinik saves a guy from being robbed. He thanks him going to television and stating that Paperinik was helping the thieves. Donald also suspects he was paid by Angus to lie.
  • Villains Want Mercy: After Paperinik repels Trauma's powers and cause his mutation to regress, he pityfully begs the hero to not hurt him. Paperinik said what we all were thinking.
    "Pathetic."
  • Voice Changeling: One does this to trick gang members. Trauma can do this too. Who knew?
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In the end Trauma retreats and is never seen again until "The Mark of Moldrock".
  • Wicked Cultured: Gorthan likes to quotes Shakespeare and Earth's proverbs, much to the confusion of his soldiers. It won't be the last time this happens.
