Tropes for the episode:

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The prisoners are genuinely upset about Sister Pete getting fired.
  • Asshole Victim: Richard L'Italien is a Serial Killer completely devoid of any compassion or empathy. No one in the audience sheds a tear when he is executed.
  • Being Good Sucks:
    • Beecher's attempts to save Keane lead to Schillinger forcing him to eat paper and also put him on bad terms (albeit temporarily) with Ryan, who was the only friend he had in the prison.
    • Rebadow is thrown into solitary for working with Beecher to help Keane.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Keane donates his kidney to his sister and asks his father to reconcile with Billie.
  • Descent into Addiction: Beecher begins getting heroin from Ryan after he fails to save Keane.
  • Easily Forgiven: Ryan lets Beecher off the hook trying to help Keane and Beecher doesn't hold Ryan's threats to murder him against him.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: As Mukada points out, L'Italien doesn't understand the difference between sexual desire and genuine love.
  • Enemy Mine: McManus enlists Said to rally religious leaders to ensure Keane is allowed to donate his kidney.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Keane allows himself to be killed in the hopes it will the end the war between the homeboys and the Italian mob.
    • Sister Pete is willing to protest the death penalty even if it means losing her job.
  • Hidden Depths: Groves is genuinely interested in the anger management class.
  • It's All My Fault: McManus believes Keane's execution and Dino's murder are his doing.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Ryan tells Adebisi and Kenny that Joey set Keane up so that they would beat him up and he could get out of paying what he owed Joey on a baseball bet.
  • Mercy Kill: Alvarez takes his son off life support to end his suffering
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Groves tells Beecher how he can meet Keane.
    • Despite threatening to kill Beecher Ryan lets him off the hook for trying to help Keane. When Beecher first questions it Ryan just simply tells him to forget about Keane rather than immediately kill him as he would with any other inmate.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Devlin allows Keane to donate his kidney for the sake of publicity.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Both McManus and Mukada do everything in their power to try to ensure Keane's dying wish to have his kidney donated to his sister. It's eventually granted.
    • Glynn allows Said to talk to Keane so long as it is only about spiritual matters.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: McManus decides that he doesn't care about Auerback's permission and chooses to let Alvarez see his son in hospital.
  • Temporary Scrappy: After Sister Pete is briefly fired, she is replaced by Auerback, a prissy and callous Obstructive Bureaucrat who both the staff and the inmates loathe. Glynn rehires Pete at the soonest possible opportunity, having never actually intended to fire her, and kicks Auerback to the curb.
    O'Reily: We want Sister Pete!
Auerback: Um, well, Sister Pete isn't here right now.
    Wangler: Fuck you!
  • Villain Respect: Ryan genuinely compliments Beecher's bravery in trying to save Keane, even after he had threatened him not to.
