This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight : More of Poussey's back story.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The final shot of the season is of Poussey (in flashback), staring directly into the camera after her spectacular night out in New York City — a fitting tribute to the character's memory and spirit.
  • Brick Joke : The "puke bucket" Pennsatucky made in Episode 6 makes a reappearance.
  • Call-Back : After three seasons of silence, we're reminded what a lovely singing voice Norma has.
    • And Poussey's "she-wee" invention.
  • Chekhov's Gun : A literal example, in that a gun introduced in the first act has to be used by the third act.
  • Cliffhanger: The season ends with a riot about to start and Daya pointing Humphrey's gun at him.
  • Drag Queen : While lost in New York City, Poussey meets a couple of drag queens who take her to a show.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Brook gets drunk off of Poussey's moonshine after her death.
  • Heel Realization: Lorna knows full well that she's getting too clingy with Vinnie the same way she was with Christopher.
  • Malaproper: Angie and Leanne are wondering where the phrase "ATTICA" came from during the riot. They manage to confuse it with To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hunger Games
  • Mood Whiplash: Black Cindy and Janae go from screaming murder at Sankey and her gang to laughing like schoolgirls when they see what's underneath Alison's hijab.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Bayley's reaction to accidentally killing Poussey's has been this.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: The person at corporate Caputo calls.
  • Oh, Crap!: Judy's reaction to the riot coming her way just as she's about to leave Litchfield. Suzanne also has this when, as she's wheeled into the infirmary, that her bed is right next to Maureen.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Taystee starts the riot when not only does Caputo not mention Poussey's name, but also gives Bayley a lighter punishment.
  • The Reveal: Alison briefly lifts her hijab and hair is shown to be dyed in a flashy bright red.
  • Stealth Pun : One of the inmates is reading Lord of the Flies.
  • Title Drop: Pennsatucky tells Donuts, "Toast can't never be bread again" during their conversation about their relationship.
  • Trash the Set: While Angie and Leanne are drunk off of what's left of Poussey's moonshine, they tear down Lolly's time machine.
