Tropes in this episode:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: On top of awkwardly dealing with her strained WASP family and disapproving father, Piper gets her period all on her birthday.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The episode revolves around Boo, from her difficult teen years to her relationships with women and the strained circumstances around her mother's death.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Piper gives one to her father when he won't even talk to her or face her on her birthday.
Piper: Are you not gonna say anything?
Bill: I have nothing to say, Piper.
Piper: Then why did you come?
    Bill: Because it's your birthday.
  • Author Tract: Arguably. Boo gets a couple of intense speeches, including a Take That! to the "Eastberg" Baptist Church. A Reality Subtext here, as Lea Delaria has shouted down representatives of the Westboro Baptist Church in the past.
  • Cooldown Hug: Taystee gives Suzanne this when the latter accepts that Vee's dead.
  • Cure Your Gays: Big Boo fools a homophobic priest into thinking he has accomplished this on her, then calls him out on it.
  • Daddy's Girl: Big Boo was quite close to her dad growing up before they fell apart due to her dad wanting her to down-play her butch behavior and appearances.
  • Disappointed in You: Piper's father feels like she's wasting her life away in prison at the age of 32.
  • Fanservice: The sex scene between Big Boo and one of her lovers.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Suzanne has been going through denial and anger, though now she finally gets to depression and acceptance after Taystee makes it sink in that Vee's gone.
  • Hates Wearing Dresses: In her teen years, Big Boo is forced by her mother to wear a dress for a family photo. Big Boo voices her disgust.
Big Boo: I look like a thumb in a dress.
  • I Have No Son!: Boo's parents don't accept her for being a butch lesbian so she disowns them from her life.
    • Piper's dad expresses disappointment in her for being in prison and refuses to even look at her on her birthday.
  • Mama Bear: Gloria tells her son Benny that unless he shapes the fuck up, she will call her gangbanging cousins to dangle his ass off a bridge until he pees himself.
  • Mood Whiplash: Boo starts out razzing Pennsatucky, then sits down to read her holy-rolling mail.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: As difficult as their relation was to each other, Boo regrets not going to see her dying mother.
  • No Periods, Period: Piper is embarrassed when Alex figures out she is on her period and begs her not to tell anyone.
  • Odd Friendship: More of Pennsatucky and Boo. A seriously weird friendship, but it works.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Piper tells her family she has a girlfriend; later Piper asks Alex to be her girlfriend and she accepts.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The song playing in the gay bar in a flashback is "Baby Got Back" by Sir-Mix-A-Lot.
  • Shown Their Work: The flashback depicting Big Boo's strap-on sex scene.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Big Boo gives one to a homophobic priest.
Big Boo: Yes, I'm just trying to remember the passage... Oh yes. It's Corinthians 69. I think it goes, "Suck my big fat dyke dick, you fucking hateful piece of shit!" Fuck you! If a man lie with mankind as he lieth - " Really? "Lieth"? I mean, you can't say that word without a lisp. Who are these people kidding? God was the original fag. Jesus was a fag. He said "This is my body. Eat me.
  • Tomboyness Upgrade: Flashbacks as a teenager shows her as an Unwillingly Girly Tomboy to please her mother, though her father knows about her true masculine ways. After her mother's death, she always keeps her butch appearance because she doesn't need to pretend anymore.
