Recap / Orange Is the New Black S02E04 "A Whole Other Hole"

Go To

"A Whole Other Hole" is the fourth episode of Season 2 of Orange Is the New Black.

Poussey invents a device that allows her to pee standing up; this sparks off a cacophanous discussion about female anatomy, specifically how many holes women have. Sophia is seen conducting basic sex ed at the end of the episode, setting everyone on the right track to finding their urethras. Red, trying to find something to do with her life (as well as resume the smuggling operations that gave her relevance to the other inmates), starts a gardening club for the Golden Girls. Boo accuses Nicky of poaching all of her intended sexual conquests, and proposes a contest over how many of the new inmates they can get their hands on; when Chapman tries to reclaim her possessions, Boo offers to return Miss Claudette's blanket if Piper sets her up with Soso. Lorna Morello takes Rosa to her cancer treatment, while flashbacks depict her life as a credit-card scammer who meets Christopher, the man of her dreams, at the post office. Upset that he's marrying someone else, she takes the van from the hospital and breaks into his house; simultaneously, flashbacks show her in court for stalking Christopher, who went on one date with her and then lost interest. Though her man-crush returns home and almost catches her, Morello makes it safely back to Litchfield, where the other inmates assure her she will make a lovely bride.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Big Boo for Soso.
  • Accidental Kiss: Poussey plants one on Taystee prompting her to remind Poussey of their Incompatible Orientation.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Morello's back story is revealed.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Sister Ingalls contemptuously refers to Brook and her ilk as "these bogus bohemian babies."
  • All Gays are Promiscuous: Played with, during Boo and Nicky's pre-contest discussion. Nicky's conquests might be an extension of her addictive personality ("I'm a collector.") and Boo is just "very competitive."
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Piper to Red as she takes her side of the bunk and moves Red's things around.
Piper: What are you gonna do? Not feed me?
  • Ax-Crazy: Morello places herself in this episode as one of the absolute looniest gals in the Litch.
  • Badass Boast: Nicky delivers one to Boo once her sex book is found.
Nicky: Some people collect buttons or Taco Bell Chihuahuas. I collect orgasms. I am like a bean-flicking Mother Teresa!
  • Baffled by Own Biology: The episode reveals that many of the inmates are unaware that the "pee hole" and the "main coochie hole" are two separate orifices. Even Black Cindy, who has given birth, was surprised to learn this. By the end of the episode, former firefighter Sophia offers some basic sex education to her fellow inmates.
  • Bait-and-Switch: For most of the flashbacks, it seems Morello regularly scamming online shopping services is what's going to send her to jail. Then we actually see the trial...
  • Bait the Dog: Red gives Caputo a way of killing the bugs in his plants, showing her gardening knowledge. She then approaches him based on this rapport, to convince him to let her start a greenhouse.
  • Call-Back:
  • Cardboard Prison: Only one CO is sent with Rosa to the hospital. Morello is allowed to simply take the van alone to the hospital garage for three hours, with nothing to prevent her from driving wherever she likes.
  • Cartwright Curse: Everyone Rosa loves dies. Foreshadowing for her later back story reveal.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Lorna's Meet Cute with Christopher.
  • Coitus Uninterruptus: Nicky keeps going with the sex while Soso keeps on talking.
  • Fanservice: Nicky and Soso having sex in the church.
  • Gargle Blaster: Discussed. Poussey's recipe for hooch includes "Kool-Aid, ketchup, old fruit, and mouldy bread." It makes Suzanne's head funny.
  • Karma Houdini: Morello, full stop. She manages to actually escape in the Litchfield van, drive to Christopher's house, break in and snoop through the place (stealing a wedding invitation and a teddy bear in the process), and even fall asleep in his bathtub, and doesn't get caught.
  • Mad Love: Morello for Christopher.
  • MacGyvering: Poussey's standup-pee apparatus, which she decides to call "The Stand and Deliver." She also proposes the name "Shewee", the name of an actual such device.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Vee sees Taystee and Poussey cuddling and assumes they're prison lovers when they're just friends.
  • Oh, Crap!: Piper's face when she thinks Soso is going to be her bunkmate.
  • Odd Friendship: Between Rosa and the young patient in the clinic.
  • Precision F-Strike: After two episodes of absurdly naive rambling where she never curses once, Soso is understandably furious upon realizing Piper tried to sell her as a sex slave and calls her "seriously fucked up."
  • Prison Rape: Discussed. Piper warns Soso that she will suffer this eventually unless she finds herself a prison wife.
  • Rejected Apology: Gina rejects Red's apology for the burns.
  • Sex for Solace: After finding out Piper pimped her out for a blanket, Soso turns to Nicky for this.
  • Shout-Out:
  • "Shut Up" Kiss: Of a different kind. When Nicky goes down on her, Soso can't stop talking, which goes on for a while before Nicky, clearly annoyed, stands up, ditches her trousers and undies and shoves herself into Soso's face to shut her up.
  • Situational Sexuality: Soso gets involved with Nicky for comfort and protection. Vee lampshades this as she accuses Taystee of being gay with Poussey.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: Morello cries listening to "Almost Paradise (Knocking On Heaven's Door)" and looks for directions to Christopher's place.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Remember how you all thought how sweet it was that Morello used her impending wedding to stay sane? Yeaaah...
