Recap / Ninjago S1E9 "The Royal Blacksmiths"

Go To

The four Ninja go undercover as a dance troupe and enter a talent contest in their quest to win "The Blade Cup", where one of the Fang Blades is hidden.

Airdate: March 14, 2012

Still on the hunt for the Fangblades, the Ninja and the Serpentine both discover one being passed off as a trophy in a talent competition. To win it, Cole reluctantly returns to his father, Lou, a singer in the band the Royal Blacksmiths, for help. Cole eventually tells his father the truth about where he's been all this time and what he's been doing (when Lou thought that Cole had been to a performing arts school). The Ninja face off against the Serpentine in the competition, and Cole unlocks his true potential.

Meanwhile, Wu and Garmadon continue their trek through the Realm of Madness.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All There in the Script: Cole's father's name is Lou, which is shown in the end credits.
  • Character Focus: As the third of four episodes focusing on the Ninja's true potentials, this episode focuses on Cole and his relationship with his father.
  • Friendship Moment: A brief one between Garmadon and Wu.
  • He's Back!: Garmadon returns to Ninjago for the first time in a decade, and triumphantly announces his return.
  • I Have No Son!: Once Cole tells his dad the truth, he doesn't take it very well and immediately disowns him.
  • Mundane Solution: The Ninja originally plan to just steal the Fangblade and skip the entire talent competition. They only relent because doing so could irreparably damage Cole's relationship with his father.
  • Mythology Gag: Cole mentions Clutch Powers, the protagonist of a direct-to-video LEGO animated movie The Adventures of Clutch Powers.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Pythor’s disguise as one of the judges merely has him wear a fake beard, yet the other judges and the audience don’t suspect anything beyond questioning why he looks different from the photo of the actual judge, which Pythor hand waves with a blatant lie. Only the Ninja see through his disguise.
  • Parents in Distress: Cole unlocks his true potential rescuing his father.
  • 6 Is 9: When the other two talent show judges give the "Treble Maker's" performance 6 out of 10, Pythor growls at them, intimidating them to turn their score cards upside down to become 9.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Cole's relationship with his father. He finally gets his wish at the end.
